Dewald Brevis shines for CSK in IPL 2025 with 225 runs in 6 matches. After an emotional goodbye, he hopes for a return as CSK eyes retention ahead of the mini-auction. A bright spot in CSK’s rough season.

South African young gun Dewald Brevis has expressed heartfelt gratitude towards the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) after completing a short yet impactful stint in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The 22-year-old batter, who joined CSK midway through the season as an injury replacement, took to social media to thank the franchise, teammates, and fans for their overwhelming support.

Brevis was signed by CSK after pacer Gurjapneet Singh was ruled out of the season. The decision turned out to be a silver lining for the struggling franchise, as the right-handed batter scored 225 runs in just six matches at an explosive strike rate of 180 and a solid average of 37.50. His aggressive strokeplay and consistency were among the few bright spots in what proved to be a dismal campaign for CSK, who, for the first time in IPL history, finished at the bottom of the points table.

In an emotional Instagram post shared on Tuesday, two days after CSK ended their season with a consolation win over Gujarat Titans, Brevis reflected on his experience.

“Thank you to Chennai management, coaches, and everyone involved for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to do what I love – PLAYING CRICKET,” wrote Brevis. “A special thank you to my teammates for making me feel welcome from day one. And to all our incredible fans in India, you were amazing. The atmosphere and support at Chepauk were unforgettable. I hope to be back soon.”

The post included a photo with legendary CSK captain MS Dhoni, who had returned to lead the side after regular captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was sidelined due to injury. Brevis acknowledged the influence of senior players like Dhoni during his time with the team.

Brevis, who previously featured for the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2022 and 2024, went unsold in the IPL 2025 auction. However, his standout performance in SA20 for MI Cape Town, where he scored 291 runs, kept him on the radar of IPL scouts. His late call-up by CSK proved to be timely and rewarding for both parties.

With the IPL mini-auction expected later this year, CSK could opt to retain Brevis for future campaigns. The franchise will also evaluate the performances of other replacement players like Ayush Mhatre and Urvil Patel, who made significant contributions during the second half of the season.
