Two local leaders of Trinamool Congress (TMC) have been arrested for allegedly gang-raping a BJP worker’s ailing wife in Bagnan in Howrah district of West Bengal, officials said on Monday.
According to reports, seven TMC activists, including two local party leaders, allegedly assaulted and gang-raped the sick woman after tying her hands and legs with rope at her residence at Bainan area under Bagnan Police Station limits on Saturday (Aug 7) midnight, when her husband was in Kolkata.
Later on Sunday morning, the woman was rescued in a serious condition and was rushed to Uluberia Sub-Divisional Hospital where she is currently undergoing treatments.
Family members of the victim lodged a complaint with Uluberia Woman Police Station based on which an FIR has been registered.
Senior officials of Howrah Rural Police said that two accused— TMC’s region president Kutubuddin Mallick and local Yuva TMC president Debasish Rana— had already been arrested and they will be produced before an Uluberia court on Monday.
“Our investigation is on and we are currently quizzing the arrested persons,” a local police officer said.
Taking the matter to Twitter, BJP‘s IT in-charge, Amit Malviya, wrote: “34 year old wife of a BJP worker tied and brutally gangraped by TMC workers led by Kutubuddin Mallik and others in Bengal’s Bagnan. Local police initially refused to even file her complaint and wanted to dilute the case. TMC is using rape as a political tool to silence opponents.”
