Tension erupts in Sonamura as BJP victory rally leads to alleged attack on CPI(M) office. Timely intervention prevents escalation, highlighting political sensitivities following Dharmanagar by-election results and regional electoral celebrations.
Tension briefly escalated in Sonamura on Monday after a political celebration took an unexpected turn, leading to reports of an attack on a local office of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). The incident occurred during a victory rally organized by the Bharatiya Janata Party following recent electoral successes.
According to local sources, the rally was held to celebrate the party’s performance in multiple regions, including West Bengal and Assam, along with a decisive win in the Dharmanagar Assembly by-election. BJP candidate Jahar Chakraborty secured a commanding victory, reportedly receiving more than 65 percent of the votes, further energizing party supporters.
As the rally progressed through Sonamura, tensions reportedly mounted, and a CPI(M) party office became the focal point of confrontation. Eyewitness accounts suggest that sections of the rally crowd displayed aggressive behavior, leading to concerns of potential damage and escalation.
Despite the situation turning volatile, further deterioration was prevented through timely intervention and restraint from local political leadership. Shubhrajit Das, identified as a Mandal president, played a key role in de-escalating tensions and ensuring the safety of the party office. His efforts, along with cooperation from local members, helped restore calm in the area.
Authorities and community members emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and avoiding provocations during politically sensitive moments. While no major injuries or extensive damage were reported, the incident has once again highlighted the fragile nature of political rivalries in the region.
