BJP’s Jahar Chakraborty wins Dharmanagar by-election with record margin, securing 24,009 votes. The landslide victory reinforces BJP’s dominance in Tripura, reflects strong voter turnout, and signals continued support for the party’s development and governance agenda.

A decisive mandate has emerged from the Dharmanagar Assembly by-election, where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a sweeping victory, reinforcing its political dominance in North Tripura. Party candidate Jahar Chakraborty won by an unprecedented margin, polling 24,009 votes and leaving rivals far behind in a contest marked by high voter participation and tight security arrangements.

According to official figures released after counting, the opposition candidates trailed significantly. Chayan Bhattacharjee of the Congress received 5,903 votes, while Amitabha Datta of the CPI(M) secured 5,957 votes. Other candidates, including Bibash Ranjan Das, Sanjoy Chaudhury, and independent Brajalal Debnath, received marginal support. Additionally, 440 voters opted for NOTA, indicating a small segment of electoral dissent.

The by-election was conducted following the demise of sitting MLA and Assembly Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen in December 2025. Voting took place on April 9 and recorded a notable turnout of 80.04 percent, reflecting strong civic engagement and heightened political interest in the constituency.

The counting process was held at PM Shri Dharmanagar Government Girls’ School under a robust three-tier security system. Senior officials, including Rati Ranjan Debnath, Avinash Rai, and Jayanta Karmakar, oversaw the arrangements to ensure a smooth and transparent counting process. Preventive measures, including restrictions under Section 163 of the BNSS, were enforced to avoid disruptions, and the entire exercise concluded peacefully.

From the initial rounds of counting, Chakraborty established a commanding lead that steadily widened, including gains from postal ballots. By the final round, his margin had become insurmountable, signaling a clear and emphatic endorsement by the electorate. The Returning Officer, Debyani Choudhury, formally handed over the certificate of election, declaring Chakraborty as the newly elected MLA.

Reacting to the result, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha expressed gratitude to the voters and emphasized the party’s commitment to development, peace, and progress in Dharmanagar. Several BJP leaders and ministers echoed similar sentiments, describing the outcome as a strong mandate for stability and governance continuity.

Celebrations erupted across Dharmanagar soon after the announcement, with party supporters organizing rallies, distributing sweets, and raising slogans in a festive atmosphere. The victory has not only strengthened BJP’s foothold in the region but also highlighted its grassroots mobilization capabilities ahead of future political challenges in the state.

This by-election result carries broader political significance, as it reinforces BJP’s influence in Tripura’s political landscape. With a record margin and a decisive voter turnout, the outcome signals strong public backing for the party’s governance agenda, setting the tone for upcoming electoral battles.
