BJP announces full-strength candidates for all 28 TTAADC seats, marking a decisive shift from alliance politics to solo contest in Tripura. Key leaders, new entrants, and strategic changes signal an aggressive push for transparent governance.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has unveiled its complete list of candidates for all 28 seats of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), marking a significant strategic shift ahead of the upcoming council elections. The announcement was made during a press conference at the party’s state headquarters on Tuesday.

State BJP President Rajib Bhattacharjee confirmed that the party will contest all seats independently, breaking away from its earlier alliance approach. “We have decided to field candidates in all 28 seats. The names are being announced, and candidates will file their nominations within the next two days,” he told reporters.

Shift from Alliance to Independent Contest

The move marks a clear departure from the 2021 TTAADC elections when the BJP contested fewer seats due to a seat-sharing agreement with its ally, the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT). This time, the party has opted to go solo, distancing itself not only from IPFT but also from the Tipra Motha Party, which has emerged as a strong regional force.

Political observers view this decision as a high-stakes gamble aimed at consolidating the BJP’s tribal vote base while projecting confidence in its organizational strength across the autonomous council areas.

Key Leaders and New Entrants in the Fray

Several senior party functionaries have been fielded as candidates, including General Secretary Bipin Debbarma, Vice President Bimal Chakma, and Secretaries David Debbarma and Bhumikananda Reang. Their inclusion underscores the party’s emphasis on experienced leadership in crucial constituencies.

In a notable political development, two former leaders of Tipra Motha—Sadagar Kaloi and Ananta Debbarma—joined the BJP just hours before the candidate list was announced. Both have been immediately fielded as candidates, indicating the party’s intent to capitalize on recent defections.

Chief Minister Manik Saha formally welcomed the new entrants, signaling unity and expansion within the party ranks ahead of the elections.

Ticket Distribution and Strategic Changes

According to Bhattacharjee, the BJP has largely retained its sitting Members of District Council (MDCs), with only two changes in Machmara and Manu Chailengta constituencies. “We had won nine seats in 2021, and most of the sitting MDCs have been re-nominated, barring minor adjustments,” he stated.

The candidate list features a mix of experienced leaders and fresh faces across Scheduled Tribe (ST) and General constituencies. Key candidates include Rabindra Reang (Damchhara-Jampui), Manju Rani Sarkar (Machmara), Sailendra Nath (Dasda-Kanchanpur), and Bimal Kanti Chakma (Karamchhara), among others.

Focus on Governance and Transparency

Highlighting the party’s vision, Bhattacharjee appealed to voters to support the BJP for establishing a transparent and accountable administration in the Sixth Schedule areas. “We urge the electorate to vote for the BJP to ensure development, transparency, and effective governance in TTAADC,” he said.

The TTAADC, which administers tribal areas in Tripura, plays a crucial role in local governance and development. Control of the council is seen as politically significant, especially in shaping policies for tribal communities.

Political Implications

The BJP’s decision to contest all seats independently is expected to intensify the electoral battle in the tribal belt. With regional parties like Tipra Motha maintaining strong grassroots support, the चुनाव is likely to witness a multi-cornered contest.
