Former Chief Minister and current Lok Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb on Saturday hit out at the previous Communist regime in Tripura, accusing it of undermining the state’s cultural heritage and traditions. Speaking at the inauguration of the three-day Poush Mela in Kumarghat, Deb lauded the current government for spearheading a cultural and spiritual revival in the state.

The Poush Mela, an initiative of MLA Bhagwan Chandra Das, is being held at the Kumarghat PWD ground. The event showcases Tripura’s rich heritage through 46 stalls, many set up by self-help groups offering traditional delicacies like pitha. Over the next three days, the fair will feature cultural programs celebrating the region’s diverse traditions and values.

Addressing the gathering, Deb highlighted the detrimental impact of the Communist regime on Tripura’s cultural identity. He stated that during their rule, people in the state became disconnected from their cultural roots and traditions. However, he credited the citizens of Tripura for embracing change in 2018 by voting out the Communists, which he described as a step toward restoring their cultural pride.

“Our cultural heritage is what binds us together as one nation,” Deb emphasized, praising the current government’s efforts in reviving the state’s traditional and spiritual values.

Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee and MLA Bhagwan Chandra Das also addressed the audience, underscoring the importance of such initiatives in preserving and promoting cultural heritage. Unakoti Zilla Parishad Sabhadhipati Amalendu Das and Unakoti District Magistrate Dilip Kumar Chakma were also present at the inaugural event.

The Poush Mela stands as a testament to the ongoing efforts to celebrate and safeguard Tripura’s cultural and spiritual legacy, fostering a sense of unity and pride among its people.
