Bihar Police arrested over 2.28 lakh accused till July 2025, including 8,823 hardcore criminals and 141 Naxalites. With record arms seizures and crackdown on illegal factories, the state targets organised crime through intensified state-wide and Special Task Force campaigns.

The Bihar Police has intensified its state-wide crackdown on crime, achieving a record number of arrests in just the first seven months of 2025. According to official figures released by the Additional Director General (ADG) of Law and Order, Pankaj Kumar Darad, the police have arrested 2,28,188 accused persons between January and July this year, including thousands of hardcore criminals, Maoists, and individuals carrying cash rewards.

Among the total arrests, the force successfully apprehended 8,823 hardcore criminals and 141 Naxalites, many of whom were long-absconding offenders. Darad noted that the percentage of hardcore criminals among the arrested individuals was nearly 40 percent, which he described as a “major achievement for Bihar Police.”

Arrest Trends: Stronger Performance in 2025

The data highlights that the pace of arrests this year has been significantly higher than in previous years.

  • 2025 (till July): 2,28,188 arrests

  • 2024 (full year): 3,35,000 arrests

  • 2023 (full year): 3,51,424 arrests

  • 2022 (full year): 3,46,332 arrests

With almost seven months left in 2025, police officials are confident that the total number of arrests this year will surpass previous annual records. “The momentum is very strong, and the operations are being executed in a more targeted manner than before,” an official said.

Focus on Illegal Weapons

Apart from arrests, Bihar Police has also stepped up its campaign against illegal weapons. Between January and July 2025, the force seized 2,625 illegal firearms and 16,301 live cartridges.

Comparatively:

  • Cartridges seized: 6,702 (2024), 30,201 (2023), 28,200 (2022)

  • Illegal weapons seized: 4,917 (2024), 4,813 (2023), 4,288 (2022)

In addition, the police successfully recovered 38 regular or stolen firearms that had earlier been snatched from security personnel.

The ADG confirmed that a special campaign against illegal arms manufacturing units is underway. Till July this year, authorities busted 36 mini gun factories, compared to 114 in 2024, 55 in 2023, and 32 in 2022.

State-wide Campaign Against Crime

The Bihar Police has launched a state-wide campaign, with directives issued to all police stations to prepare lists of hardcore and absconding criminals. The initiative is being carried out with combined efforts of local police and the Special Task Force (STF) to ensure the arrest of long-absconding offenders.

ADG Darad stressed that the focus is not solely on large-scale arrests but also on dismantling criminal networks. “Our goal is not just to improve numbers but to strike at the root of organised crime. The strategy combines district-level action with specialised operations to neutralise Maoist elements, arms traffickers, and habitual offenders,” he said.

Bigger Picture of Law Enforcement in Bihar

The sharp rise in arrests reflects Bihar Police’s determination to control crime, enhance law and order, and build public confidence. Experts believe that the current figures suggest a changing pattern in the policing system — one that is shifting from general crackdowns to data-driven, intelligence-based policing.

Observers point out that the campaign against Maoists, illegal arms manufacturers, and absconding criminals has a dual impact: reducing violent crime while also discouraging criminal syndicates from regrouping. By keeping the pressure high, Bihar Police aims to create an environment less conducive to criminal activities in the state.

With nearly 2.28 lakh arrests already made and several months still left in 2025, Bihar is on track to record its highest-ever yearly crackdown on crime. The figures not only surpass mid-year benchmarks of previous years but also reflect the growing efficiency of police operations across districts.
