Benchmark domestic equity indices rose around 0.2% today. The Sensex advanced 185 points to close at 73 thousand and 320, while Nifty added 34 points to settle at 22 thousand and 713. However, in the broader market on the National Stock Exchange, the Mid-cap 100 fell nearly 0.3%, while the Small-cap 100 closed about 0.4% lower.
Earlier, markets opened with a gap down amid negative Asian cues, but the indices eased their losses as the session progressed and turned positive in the final hour of trade.
In the Sensex pack, shares of 19 out of 30 companies logged gains. Among top performers, HCL Tech surged nearly 3.5%, Tech Mahindra climbed almost 2.7%, and Infosys rose 1.9%. In contrast, Asian Paints slumped about 2%, Eternal dropped over 2.1%, and Sun Pharma fell 1%.
Among the sectoral indices at the BSE, 13 out of 25 sectors ended in the negative territory, except Capital Goods, which remained unchanged. Among the top drags, Mid-Small private banks plummeted over 1.1%, Consumer Durables lost almost 0%, and Hospitals dipped over 0.8%. Among the gainers, Focused IT climbed almost 2.8%, IT jumped over 2.4%, and Realty gained 1.2%.
The overall market breadth at the BSE was positive, as shares of 2,680 companies advanced, 1,547 declined, and 160 remained unchanged.
