In Bangladesh, the government today banned Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, its student wing Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, and all its associate bodies as political parties and organizations. The Home Ministry of Bangladesh issued a notification banning Jamaat and Shibir under Section 18(1) of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009, in the afternoon. The notification will become effective immediately.

According to the gazette notification, the government has substantial evidence that Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its affiliate Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir were involved in the recent killings, destructive activities, and terrorist activities directly and through incitement during quota reform protests.

The government believes that Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, along with their affiliated organisations, have been involved in terrorist activities, reports Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS).

Mentioning verdicts of the International Crimes Tribunal, the notification said that the tribunal held Jamaat and its front organisation liable Islami Chhatra Shibir for committing genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity during the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971.

Earlier on Monday, the Awami League-led 14-party alliance unanimously recommended banning Jamaat-Shibir during a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Gonobhaban, Dhaka.
