Bangladesh CEC AMM Nasir Uddin Rules Out Proportional Representation Without Legal Reforms

Must Read

Chief Election Commissioner of Bangladesh, AMM Nasir Uddin, has ruled out the possibility of introducing the Proportional Representation system in the upcoming national elections without necessary legal reforms.

Speaking to media in Dhaka, the CEC clarified that the current Representation of the People Order does not permit the adoption of the PR system, under which seats in parliament are allocated to parties based on their share of the vote. He emphasised that any shift from the existing first-past-the-post system would require amendments to electoral laws by the Parliament.

The comments come amid demands from Jamaat-e-Islami and other Islamist parties and civil society groups for adopting proportional representation as a way to ensure broader inclusion in Bangladesh’s political process. The Election Commission has reiterated its commitment to conduct free, fair, and participatory elections under the prevailing legal framework.
