ASSAM -MIZORAM AGREE TO BURY THE HATCHET

Assam and Mizoram have agreed to take measures to promote, preserve and maintain peace and harmony amongst the people of two states particularly in border areas. In a meeting held in Aizawl today, representatives of both state governments also resolved to take forward the initiatives taken by the Union Home Ministry and Chief Ministers of Assam and Mizoram to remove the tension prevailing along the inter-state border between two states.

Both states have confirmed this agreement by issuing a joint statement following a meeting of Ministers of two states held in Aizawl today. In the meeting Home Minister of Mizoram Lalchamliana, Information & Public Relations Minister Lalruatkima and Assam’s border protection and development Minister Atul Bora, Urban development & Irrigation Minister Ashok Singhal along with officials from both states discussed issues pertaining to the inter-state border problem.

The joint statement was signed by Assam’s Minister Mr Bora, Secretary and commissioner of state’s border protection and development department GD Tripathi. From Mizoram side, state Home Minister Lalchamliana and home secretary Vanlalngaihsaka signed the joint statement.

Also, both state governments have agreed to maintain peace in the inter-state border areas, where neutral force from the Centre will be deployed. It is also agreed that neither of two states will send their own forest and police forces for patrolling, domination, enforcement or fresh deployment to any of the areas where confrontation and conflict has taken place between two police forces recently. These areas include all inter-state borders areas of Karimganj, Hailakandi and Cachar (in Assam) and Mamit and Kolasib districts of Mizoram.
