Assam Police arrested three more individuals for allegedly promoting pro-Pakistan views on social media, raising the total to 56. Among them is AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam, charged with sedition for claiming government conspiracy in recent terror attacks. CM Sarma calls such acts treason.

Assam Police have arrested three more individuals for allegedly expressing pro-Pakistan sentiments on social media, according to a statement made by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday.

The three arrested individuals have been identified as Lalchan Ali, Samir Ali, and Rakib Hussain. Lalchan Ali was apprehended from Dhubri district, Samir Ali from Lakhimpur district, and Rakib Hussain from Karbi Anglong district. Their arrests are part of a statewide crackdown on what the government describes as anti-national activities and social media posts sympathetic to Pakistan.

With these arrests, the total number of individuals taken into custody across the state for similar alleged offenses has risen to 56.

Chief Minister Sarma emphasized the gravity of the matter, stating, “Any act of sympathising with the enemy is an act of treason.” He reaffirmed his government’s commitment to maintaining national integrity and ensuring that no individual promotes sentiments that could potentially harm the country’s unity and security.

Among those arrested so far, the most high-profile name is that of Aminul Islam, a sitting MLA of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) representing the Dhing Assembly constituency. Islam was the first to be arrested under sedition charges on May 1 following his controversial remarks concerning the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed over 20 lives.

A video clip of Aminul Islam’s statement went viral on social media, where he was heard claiming that the terror attacks in Pulwama and Pahalgam were part of a larger conspiracy allegedly orchestrated by the Central government. He alleged that the 2019 Pulwama attack, which killed 42 CRPF personnel, was staged to influence the outcome of the Lok Sabha elections that year.

Islam further suggested that similar motivations might be behind the recent Pahalgam incident, questioning the official narrative and accusing the BJP-led Central government of attempting to divide communities along religious lines.

“If the Narendra Modi-led government does not carry out a fair probe into the Pahalgam attack, and instead continues to divide Hindus and Muslims, I will have to believe it was part of a larger conspiracy,” he stated, directly naming Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.

Reacting to the controversy, AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal distanced himself and his party from Islam’s statements. “AIUDF stands with the government. The terrorists have no religion, and those who spread terrorism are against Islam,” Ajmal said.
