Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated Northeast India’s first VFS Global visa application centre in Guwahati, offering visa application services for 14 countries. The facility aims to simplify international travel procedures for students, tourists and business professionals across the region.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday inaugurated Northeast India’s first visa application centre in Guwahati, marking a significant development in the region’s international travel infrastructure. Established by VFS Global, the centre is expected to make visa application services more accessible to residents of Assam and other northeastern states.
The newly opened facility will accept visa applications for 14 countries, helping prospective international travellers complete application-related procedures closer to home. The countries covered by the centre are Austria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Estonia, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Malta, Morocco, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
The centre is expected to benefit students planning to pursue higher education abroad, tourists, business professionals and other applicants seeking international travel opportunities. Previously, some applicants from the Northeast faced additional travel and logistical challenges when accessing visa application services outside the region.
With the opening of the new facility, residents will have a more convenient option for submitting visa applications and completing related formalities in Guwahati, a major commercial, educational and administrative hub for northeastern India.
Tourism Minister Ajanta Neog, Transport Minister Charan Boro and Yusmi Talwar, Chief Executive Officer for South Asia at VFS Global, attended the inauguration ceremony. Representatives of the diplomatic missions of Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Italy and France were also present at the event.
The establishment of the centre is expected to strengthen Guwahati’s position as a regional gateway for international travel-related services. Residents of neighbouring northeastern states frequently visit the city for education, healthcare, business and administrative requirements, making it a strategic location for facilities serving the wider region.
VFS Global provides visa application services on behalf of governments and diplomatic missions. Its role generally includes supporting applicants with document submission, application processing procedures and other administrative requirements associated with visa applications.
However, the new centre will facilitate the application process and will not decide whether a visa is granted or rejected. Final decisions will remain with the respective countries and their authorised diplomatic or immigration authorities.
Applicants planning to use the facility have been advised to verify the applicable appointment procedures, documentation requirements and service charges through VFS Global’s authorised channels before visiting the centre. Requirements may vary depending on the destination country and the type of visa being sought.
The opening is expected to reduce the need for applicants from Assam and neighbouring states to travel outside the Northeast solely to access visa application services. This could be particularly helpful for students pursuing overseas education, families planning international holidays and professionals travelling for business purposes.
The development also reflects Guwahati’s growing importance as a service centre for the northeastern region, connecting local residents with international educational, tourism and commercial opportunities.

With visa application services for 14 countries now available through the new facility, the centre represents an additional resource for prospective international travellers across the Northeast. Its effectiveness will depend on applicants having access to clear information about the services offered, appointment availability and country-specific requirements.
The inauguration marks a notable addition to Guwahati’s travel-related infrastructure and is expected to improve convenience for residents seeking to travel abroad.
