Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma says EOS-05 satellite will transform India’s disaster response through frequent Earth observation, helping authorities monitor floods, cyclones and emergencies while strengthening rescue, relief and disaster preparedness capabilities across the country.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday hailed the successful launch of the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) GSLV-F17 mission, describing the EOS-05 Earth observation satellite as a major technological advancement that could significantly strengthen India’s disaster monitoring and response capabilities.

In a post on X, Sarma highlighted the satellite’s advanced Earth-observation capabilities and said EOS-05 would provide India with a more continuous view of its territory and surrounding regions. He noted that the satellite has been placed in a geostationary orbit, enabling it to remain synchronised with the Earth’s rotation and maintain a persistent observation of selected areas.

According to the Assam Chief Minister, the satellite’s geostationary positioning marks an important difference from conventional Earth-observation satellites, which move around the planet and can observe a particular location only for limited periods during individual passes. EOS-05, by contrast, is expected to offer frequent observations of specific regions, potentially providing authorities with more timely information during rapidly changing situations.

Sarma said EOS-05 would be capable of imaging selected regions at intervals of around five minutes while covering the entire Indian landmass approximately every 30 minutes. The satellite is expected to provide imagery with a resolution of around 42 metres, offering an important new capability for monitoring large areas of the country.

The Chief Minister particularly emphasised the potential benefits of EOS-05 for disaster management. He said frequent satellite imagery could prove crucial during cyclones, floods and other emergencies where conditions can change rapidly. More regular observations could help authorities understand developments on the ground, assess affected areas and track the movement or expansion of disasters.

Such information could also support faster decision-making during rescue and relief operations. By providing updated imagery at short intervals, the satellite could help government agencies identify areas requiring immediate attention and improve coordination during large-scale emergencies.

For a disaster-prone country such as India, the ability to monitor affected regions more frequently could become an important component of disaster preparedness. Cyclones, floods and other natural disasters often require authorities to make decisions based on rapidly changing conditions. Regular Earth-observation data can provide valuable information for planning responses and assessing the impact of such events.

Sarma also praised ISRO scientists and engineers for successfully completing the mission, particularly in light of setbacks faced during previous attempts. He said the achievement reflected the persistence, discipline and determination of India’s scientific community.

The Assam Chief Minister used the occasion to underline the importance of perseverance for young Indians, saying the mission demonstrated how patience, discipline and sustained efforts can help achieve ambitious technological goals.

The successful GSLV-F17 mission represents another significant step in India’s expanding space programme. With EOS-05 expected to deliver frequent Earth-observation imagery, the satellite could strengthen India’s ability to monitor its territory, improve disaster preparedness and support emergency response operations.

The mission also highlights the growing role of space technology in addressing challenges on the ground, particularly in areas such as disaster management, environmental monitoring and emergency planning.
