Anti-narcotics drive at Lake Chowmuhani Market leads to arrest of six drug peddlers in a community-led crackdown near the market bridge area. Market committee action, supported by police, aims to curb drug trafficking and ensure public safety in the locality.

In a strong and coordinated action against illegal drug trafficking, six alleged drug peddlers were apprehended during an anti-narcotics operation conducted at Lake Chowmuhani Market. The drive was carried out near the busy market bridge area by the Lake Chowmuhani Market Committee, marking a significant step in the ongoing effort to eliminate drug-related activities from public commercial spaces.

According to official sources, the operation was planned after repeated concerns raised by traders and local residents regarding the suspected presence of drug-related activities in and around the market premises. Acting on these inputs, the market committee organized a targeted intervention aimed at identifying and detaining individuals involved in the illegal trade.

During the operation, committee members and volunteers successfully intercepted six individuals suspected of drug peddling. The accused were detained on the spot and subsequently handed over to the local police authorities for further investigation and legal proceedings. Law enforcement officials have initiated necessary procedures under applicable narcotics control laws.

Speaking to the media after the operation, Convenor Shyamal Saha highlighted that the market area had been under the influence of illegal drug activities for several years. He stated that such activities not only posed a threat to public safety but also created an unsafe environment for traders, shoppers, and daily visitors. He emphasized that the committee would continue similar anti-drug drives in the future to ensure that the market remains free from illegal substances.

“This is not a one-time effort. We are committed to conducting regular surveillance and coordinated operations to ensure that drug trafficking does not regain a foothold in this area,” Saha stated.

Local shopkeepers and residents have widely welcomed the initiative, expressing relief and appreciation for the decisive action taken by the market committee. Many traders noted that the presence of suspected drug activity had been affecting the reputation and overall environment of the marketplace, discouraging families from visiting during peak hours.

Community members also acknowledged the importance of joint efforts between local organizations and law enforcement agencies in addressing such issues. They believe that sustained vigilance and timely action can significantly reduce illegal drug networks operating in crowded public spaces.

Police officials, while confirming the custody of the accused, stated that further interrogation is underway to determine the extent of the network and possible links to larger supply chains. Authorities are also examining whether the arrested individuals are part of a broader trafficking system operating beyond the local area.

The successful operation at Lake Chowmuhani Market is being viewed as a model example of community-driven policing support. It reflects how local committees, when actively engaged, can assist law enforcement agencies in maintaining law and order and ensuring safer public spaces.
