Amitabha Ranjan , an IPS of 1988 Tripura cadre and presently Special Director of the Intelligence Bureau has been appointed as new Director General of Police of Tripura. A government notification has been issued on Thursday. Ranjan has arrived in the city and soon after his arrival the order was issued. He has replaced VS Yadav who was on extension after retirement.

Ranjan is now the senior most IPS of Tripura cadre.

The new DGP started his career in Tripura police as SDPO Kamalpur. Later he became SP of undivided North Tripura district. He also served as SP Vigilence and then became the SP Special Branch. During SP SB he handled the most sensitive and most important tasks of that time the raging militancy by ATTF and NLFT.

It was from this position SP Special Branch that he left for central deputation in 1998 July in the IB and assigned with many an important tasks across the country. Later, he became the Intelligence Bureau’s chief  in-charge of all important installations of the country- which is considered a very important assignment as the security of the important installations and institutions from sabotage of inimical forces were too serious.  He spent several years in foreign fields including Germany.

Known as a soft spoken and low-profile gentleman officer Ranjan had earlier been also requested to return to Tripura by the then Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb to take charge of the state police. At that time Ranjan was reluctant as he could have become the Director IB. However, after his batchmate Tapan Deka became the IB Director recently, Ranjan agreed to return to the state. It is learnt that this time Union Home Minister Amit Shah himself took the initiative to send Ranjan to Tripura. DGP’s position became increasingly important here in view of the ensuing assembly elections which had already been showing indication of being a highly volatile an affair and would need careful and fair handling as well as clear and specific decision making that would guide the entire Tripura police.

Ranjan studied Engineering but chose to become an IPS in 1988.
