Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) has embarked on a comprehensive plan to give a facelift to the main market of the state Maharajganj market- also known as Gol Bazar.

Built by the erstwhile King of the state the Maharajganj bazaar was supposed to be a place where not only all sorts of merchandise would be available but also to be an area with befitting ambience.

But as it happened over the decades the market not only became a dirty, ugly, congested and stinking place but is also unable to meet the ever growing crowd that visit the place almost till 10 pm night. It was due to unabated encroachment and mismanagement.

However, this time new Mayor Dipak Majumder has taken up various steps to give a total facelift of the Maharajganj market.

“While the drainage system will be improved to maintain cleanliness, the roads inside the market will be made free of encroachment”, he said during his visit at Maharajganj market.

The Mayor said all heavy vehicles carrying goods to Maharajganj and Battala markets would now be unloaded at a place near the Bypass road here and small vehicles will be used to further carry the goods to the markets from there.

The initiative is expected to be implemented by March next, he said, adding that parking and unloading of the heavy vehicles in the market would not be allowed as it cause inconvenience to the people.

According to the Mayor, in case of any fire incident in the market in the current situation, it would be very difficult to protect the market due to encroachment.

The Mayor made no bones  that no illegal construction or encroachment on road would be entertained.

He also asked the concern officials to clear the encroachment within next seven days and sought cooperation from the market committee in this regard.

AMC Councilor Ratna Dutta, Commissioner Dr. Shailesh Kumar Yadav and Khadi Board Chairman Rajib Bhattacharjee accompanied the Mayor during the visit to Maharajganj market.
