Amarpur Sub-Divisional Hospital begins night-time caesarean deliveries, enhancing emergency maternal care in rural Tripura. With four successful procedures in two weeks, the service improves access, reduces referrals, and boosts trust in public healthcare. Local mothers now receive life-saving surgeries and full maternity benefits round-the-clock.

In a landmark move towards strengthening rural healthcare, the Amarpur Sub-Divisional Hospital in Gomati District has initiated night-time caesarean section deliveries, significantly enhancing emergency maternal care in the region. Over the past two weeks alone, four successful night-time caesareans have been conducted, marking a turning point for maternal health services in this remote part of Tripura.

This development is being welcomed by the local community, who describe it as a “lifeline” for expecting mothers in areas that often face challenges accessing quality medical care at critical hours.

Meeting an Urgent Need

Dr. Prasenjit Sarkar, Sub-Divisional Medical Officer (SDMO) of Amarpur, emphasized the necessity of introducing night-time emergency services. “Many times, deliveries must be conducted urgently to save both mother and child. Previously, this often meant referring patients to distant hospitals—an ordeal involving travel complications, accommodation problems, and considerable risk to life during emergencies,” said Dr. Sarkar.

Thanks to the recent upgrade, women in Amarpur and surrounding blocks no longer face the stress of midnight referrals. Night-time emergency cesarean procedures can now be safely performed at their local government facility.

Lives Already Touched

Among the first beneficiaries of this new service were four mothers from distant corners of the sub-division:

  • Rashmita Reang from the remote village of Paharpur, under Amarpur Block, delivered her baby at 11:35 PM.

  • Ajay Das’s wife, hailing from Ghamako in the Ompi Block, underwent a successful caesarean at 1:00 AM.

  • Bamadevi Jamatia of Nagrai gave birth at 9:00 PM.

  • Monita Reang from Chellagang underwent her operation at 8:00 PM.

All the mothers and their newborns are reported to be in good health, thanks to the expert care of the medical team at Amarpur Hospital.

A Service Years in the Making

The caesarean delivery facility at Amarpur Sub-Divisional Hospital was inaugurated in February 2024 by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, with an initial provision for daytime operations. Since then, the hospital has handled an average of six caesarean deliveries per month. The recent addition of two qualified gynecologists has now made it feasible to conduct these critical procedures around the clock.

Dr. Sarkar reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to reducing referrals. “We will continue our efforts to enhance patient care and minimize emergency transfers to other hospitals,” he said.

Recognition and Motivation

The Chief Medical Officer of Gomati District, Dr. Kamal Reang, praised the hospital’s initiative as a “remarkable milestone” in rural healthcare delivery. He noted that the success has drawn attention from central authorities, including representatives from the Ministry of Health and NITI Aayog, who have inquired about the frequency and success of night-time caesareans in Amarpur.

This recognition, Dr. Reang believes, is a testament to the dedication of healthcare workers in remote areas. He extended his appreciation to all doctors, nurses, and staff involved in the endeavor.

Building Trust in Public Healthcare

The hospital is also seeing rising confidence among expecting mothers, thanks to the comprehensive care it provides. Dr. Sarkar expressed optimism that the success of the night-time caesarean service will encourage ASHA workers and healthcare professionals to further motivate pregnant women to choose government facilities over private options.

The Amarpur Sub-Divisional Hospital already handles around 50 normal deliveries per month, and with the new night-time service in place, those numbers are expected to grow.

Government hospital deliveries come with a host of benefits:

  • Free delivery services

  • Reduced risks through professional supervision

  • Blood transfusion facilities

  • Free ambulance transportation

  • Postnatal care and breastfeeding guidance

  • Birth dose vaccinations within 24 hours

  • Financial incentives under the Janani Suraksha Yojana

  • Cashless facilities under the Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram

For many rural families, these services provide a safe, cost-effective alternative to private hospitals, and they are beginning to realize the value of timely medical intervention—especially during emergencies.

As the healthcare team in Amarpur continues to break barriers and build trust, this initiative stands as a model of rural medical progress, one night-time delivery at a time.
