Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) has increased its postgraduate MD and MS seats from 95 to 153 for the 2026-27 academic session, registering a 61 per cent rise. Chief Minister Manik Saha highlighted the expansion as a major boost to medical education and specialist healthcare in Tripura.
Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) has significantly expanded its postgraduate medical education capacity for the 2026-27 academic session, increasing the number of MD and MS seats from 95 to 153. The expansion represents a 61 per cent increase and is expected to create more opportunities for aspiring doctors while strengthening specialist healthcare services in Tripura.
Announcing the development, Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha described the increase in postgraduate seats as a major milestone in the state’s medical education sector. He said the enhanced intake capacity would enable more medical graduates from Tripura and other parts of the country to pursue specialised medical training at AGMC.
The expansion covers 16 specialised medical disciplines, providing additional opportunities for students seeking postgraduate qualifications in different branches of medicine and surgery. The increased capacity is also expected to contribute to the development of a stronger specialist medical workforce in the state.
According to the Chief Minister, expanding postgraduate medical education is an important step towards improving the overall healthcare system. He emphasised that producing more qualified specialist doctors would benefit government hospitals, medical colleges and other healthcare institutions across Tripura.
The increase from 95 to 153 seats is particularly significant for medical graduates who previously had to seek postgraduate admission outside the state because of limited availability of seats. With more opportunities now available at AGMC, aspiring doctors will have greater access to advanced medical education closer to their homes.
The development is also expected to support Tripura’s long-term efforts to improve the availability of specialist healthcare professionals. A larger number of trained postgraduate doctors could help address the growing demand for specialised medical services in different districts and healthcare institutions.
Chief Minister Manik Saha attributed the achievement to the continued support and cooperation of the Central Government. He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda for their assistance in strengthening medical education and healthcare infrastructure in Tripura.
Saha further stressed that sustained investment in medical education was essential for building a stronger and more resilient healthcare system. He said expanding postgraduate training opportunities would help prepare skilled medical professionals capable of delivering advanced treatment and contributing to the state’s healthcare development.
The increase in MD and MS seats is expected to have benefits beyond the academic sector. More postgraduate doctors trained within the state could eventually strengthen the availability of specialists in government hospitals and medical institutions, potentially improving access to advanced diagnosis and treatment for patients.
AGMC’s latest expansion also reflects the state’s broader efforts to develop its medical education infrastructure and create better opportunities for young medical professionals. Strengthening postgraduate programmes across specialised disciplines can help Tripura improve its position as an emerging centre for medical education in the Northeast.
