Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) has achieved a significant milestone in medical education in Tripura with approval for 100 additional MBBS seats for the academic year 2026-27. With the latest expansion, the college’s annual MBBS intake will increase from 150 to 250 seats, creating more opportunities for aspiring medical students.
The development was welcomed by Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, who described the increase in MBBS seats as an important step towards strengthening the state’s medical education and healthcare ecosystem. In a social media post, the Chief Minister expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda for their continued support towards strengthening medical education and healthcare infrastructure in Tripura.
According to the latest approval, AGMC will admit 250 MBBS students annually from the 2026-27 academic session, adding 100 seats to its previous intake capacity. The expansion is expected to provide additional opportunities for students seeking medical education in the state and contribute to the development of the healthcare workforce.
Dr. Manik Saha said the increase in the MBBS seat capacity would create greater opportunities for the youth of Tripura. He also highlighted the importance of strengthening medical education as part of efforts to build a stronger healthcare system in the state.
With the increase in intake capacity, AGMC has joined the group of established medical institutions in the country that have an annual intake of 250 MBBS students. Institutions cited in this category include Maulana Azad Medical College in New Delhi, B.J. Medical College in Ahmedabad, Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute in Karnataka, SMS Medical College in Jaipur, Madras Medical College in Chennai and King George’s Medical University in Lucknow, among others.
The Chief Minister noted that AGMC’s new intake capacity of 250 MBBS seats represents the maximum permissible intake capacity under the National Medical Commission framework. The development marks a notable expansion of undergraduate medical education capacity at one of Tripura’s key medical institutions.
The addition of 100 MBBS seats is also expected to have wider implications for the state’s healthcare sector. An increase in the number of medical students can contribute to a larger pool of trained medical professionals in the future, while strengthening the academic and institutional environment surrounding medical education.
