Agartala Traffic Police announces special Durga Puja measures, including no-entry restrictions, stricter Puja pass issuance, parking controls, e-challan enforcement and congestion management to ensure smooth and safe traffic movement across the city during the festive period.
The Traffic Police has announced a series of special measures to regulate vehicular and pedestrian movement in Agartala during the upcoming Durga Puja, with particular emphasis on congestion management, parking discipline, traffic restrictions and stricter rules for the issuance of Puja passes.
Traffic SP Kanta Jangir outlined the department’s preparations and proposed traffic regulations at a press conference held at Traffic Bhavan in the AD Nagar police line on Friday. She said the measures have been planned in view of the expected increase in vehicle movement and the large number of pedestrians visiting markets, shopping areas and Puja pandals during the festive period.
According to the Traffic SP, several locations across Agartala have already been identified as congestion-prone areas where traffic pressure is expected to increase significantly during the Puja days. Special attention will be given to traffic movement on Nagerjala Bridge and around City Centre and Orient Chowmuhani.
Traffic arrangements at these locations will be modified according to the situation and the volume of vehicles, she said. Traffic personnel will maintain close surveillance in busy areas and strengthen coordination throughout the festival to ensure that congestion is controlled and emergency movement remains uninterrupted.
The Traffic Police will also focus on unauthorised parking in busy market areas, violations of no-entry and one-way restrictions, and prolonged parking of heavy vehicles on roads. As part of its preparations, the department has already held discussions with traders, market committees and local residents in Maharajganj Bazar to identify the major causes of traffic congestion and explore possible solutions.
SP Jangir stressed that effective traffic management during Durga Puja would require cooperation from the public, traders, transport organisations and other stakeholders. While enforcement and penalties will remain important, she appealed to motorists and visitors to follow traffic rules and park their vehicles only at designated locations.
The Traffic Police has also adopted a stricter approach towards the issuance of Puja passes following allegations of misuse of such passes in previous years. SP Jangir said no Puja pass would be issued if the applicant has pending traffic challans.
She further said Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha has given clear directions regarding the matter. The Traffic Police is working with the Directorate of Information Technology (DIT) to introduce a digital system for Puja pass issuance. The proposed system is intended to streamline the process and reduce complications while preventing the misuse of passes.
The Traffic SP also explained the procedures for clearing pending challans. According to her, challans issued before April 2026 can be settled through three channels — the e-Challan portal, the Virtual Court portal and the physical court.
However, challans issued after April 2026 will have to be paid through the Traffic Unit and will not be referred to the court, she said. The department has also initiated steps for introducing the Next-Gen Challan system as part of efforts to strengthen traffic enforcement and modernise the challan process.
Regarding traffic restrictions during Durga Puja, SP Jangir said no-entry restrictions would remain in force across the city from 5 pm to 1 am on the Puja days. The restrictions are aimed at regulating vehicle movement during the evening and night hours when large crowds are expected to gather in different parts of Agartala.
The Traffic Police is expected to deploy personnel at strategic locations and monitor traffic conditions continuously during the festival. Arrangements will be adjusted depending on crowd movement, vehicle volume and the prevailing traffic situation.

SP Jangir appealed to citizens, motorists, traders, transport organisations and other stakeholders to cooperate with the Traffic Police during the Puja period. She said responsible parking, compliance with no-entry and one-way restrictions, and adherence to traffic rules would be essential for ensuring smooth and safe movement across Agartala during Durga Puja.
