In a devastating turn of events in Kumarghat, under the Unakoti district, Seven people including children were killed and 20 others injured when a high-power 133 KV electric line electrocuted the  ISKCON Retunr Rath . The incident, which occurred in the afternoon. Condition of some of the injured are reported to be critical. Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha rushed to Kumarghat by train soon after the incident was reported to him.

The deceased were identified as Rohan Das (9) Shan Malakar (9) Sima Pal (33) , Sushmita Baidya (30) , Rupak Das (40) and Soma Biswas (28) . One name is still awaited.

According to police sources, the ISKCON ‘Ratha,’ a highly anticipated event in Kumarghat, was making its way back from the Motor Stand area towards the ISKCON temple when the unfortunate incident transpired. The ‘Rath,’ constructed primarily of iron and towering in height, approached the Town Hall, coming into contact with a high-tension electric wire. As a result, the entire ‘Rath’ became electrified, leading to multiple individuals, including those pushing the chariot and those positioned on top, receiving electric shocks and being thrown off. Tragically, six individuals, including small children, lost their lives on the spot, while approximately twenty-four others suffered severe injuries.

Authorities swiftly responded to the scene, dispatching police and fire brigade vans to provide aid. Four critically injured individuals were immediately rushed to GBP Hospital in Agartala, while the remaining injured victims were transported to local hospitals in Kumarghat, Ambassa, Fatikroy, and Kulai. Reports suggest that several individuals remain in critical condition, heightening concerns of additional fatalities. Preliminary investigations indicate that the accident occurred due to the excessive height of the ‘Rath’ chariot, which inadvertently came into contact with the lower hanging 33 KV electric line.

Expressing shock and sorrow over the tragic loss of life, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha wasted no time in responding to the news. He promptly departed for Kumarghat, intending to reach the affected area as quickly as possible to assess the situation firsthand and extend support to the victims and their families.

Further details regarding the incident are expected to emerge. This unprecedented disaster on a religious occasion has left the community in mourning and serves as a grim reminder of the importance of ensuring safety measures during such public events.
