A boys’ hostel with young students  in subdisvional town, some unexplained sounds emanating all of a sudden from a vacant room and death of a 12 years old due to heart attack—all that became a perfect recipe for a spooky tale.

The students- all very young- of  Kanchanpur boy’s hostel in North Tripura district always had some eerie feelings that their hostel was ‘haunted’. Something or someone was always giving them a feel of an unseen presence close by.

Of late, however, the uncanny suggestion of a supernatural presence in their hostel became serious enough as ‘terrifying sounds’  from a vacant room started coming with regular intervals. On Friday night in between 11 pm tp 12 pm the spooky situation turned worse- and some inmates left the hostel and headed towards their home.

But then Class-XII student Gandhajoy Reang (12) was courageous boy.  He did not believe in ghosts or anything para normal and decided to see what was actually happening, from where the sounds did really come. The young boy took cudgel on behalf of all his mates and went outside the bust whatever were there.  But then something happened. Gandhijoy suddenly fell and became unconscious. Already scared by the presence of ghosts in the hostel, this was something extreme and all of them started screaming. Gandhijoy was taken to Kanchanpur sub-divisional hospital where the attending doctor diagnosed abnormally high blood pressure in the boy and immediately referred him to Dharmanagar district hospital. But on way to the hospital he succumbed. He was later cremated without autopsy as the parents and village elders did not agree to hand over the police for post mortem.

The ghost scare intensified, following the death.

The police and others were trying hard to convince the students and , some of their parents too, that there was no ghost , and there was nothing supernatural or weird in the hostel. The sound might come from the vacant room as the big rats –which are common in the area- were having a field day in the vacant room. And the boy 0 Gandhijoy was simply suffering from an abnormal blood pressure and the situation on that night just went unfortunately fatal. They also pointed out that this was not for the first time that Gandhijoy fell unconscious—he had earlier also suffered similar bouts of BP hits.

Nevertheless, in view of the scare and subsequent developments with the student’s death police did not take chance and deployed policemen in the hostel. In the meantime, many educated youths were trying to convince the misconception that haunts the students and their parents.
