Kolkata/IBNS: Iconic buildings and structures like Bidhan Sabha Bhavan (Assembly Building), Howrah Bridge, Metcalfe Hall, Birla Planetarium, Nehru Childrens Museum, Kolkata Press Club, Birla Industrial and Technological Museum and UNICEF office in Kolkata were lit up in blue light on Monday to espouse the rights of children for commemorating World Childrens Day.

Children and their well-being are at the centre of any development programme today. Their rights of survival, growth and development, protection and participation are also equally important across the world and this illumination highlights it, an UNICEF official statement said.

These famous structures along with places of worship like Jeliya Para Durga Mandir at Purulia, Baranagar Seikh Para Jame Masjid at Kaliachak in Malda, St Marys Church at Patiram in South Dinajpur, St Josephs Believers Eastern Church at Chhara in Purulia, Parshwanath Jain Shwetamber Temple, Nipponzan Myohoji Buddhist Temple, Masjid Un Noor and Gurdwara Sant Kutiya in Kolkata have also been decorated with blue light to build awareness about childrens rights among the followers of faiths.

On this World Childrens Day, everybody is urged to treat girls and boys equally. Encourage everyone in the family to eat together. Ensure girls and boys attend schools regularly and complete their education and finally do our bit to save the planet for children, Amit Mehrotra, Chief of UNICEF of West Bengal said.

Describing this #GoBlue initiative as a reminder of UNICEFs recommitment for every child to have every right, he urged society to speak up against child marriage and violence against children.

During the recently held cricket World Cup, UNICEF partnered with ICC to promote empowerment and equality between girls and boys through #Be a champion.
