Spiralling prices of essential commodities have put the people of Kalyanpur in financial distress. With the recent spikes in fuel price and increase in cooking gas prices, vegetable prices have gone up – beyond the rich of many lower-middle-class families of Kalyanpur.

“Even as Kalyanpur is an agrarian area, prices of vegetables in the local markets are beyond our reach. It is difficult for us to purchase a sufficient quantity of vegetables for our families with our limited earnings”, said a commoner of Kalyanpur.

According to locals, vegetable prices go up, almost every year, after the Puja – however, this time prices are skyrocketing.

It was learnt that the prices of vegetables like cauliflower is being sold at Rs 100-120 per Kg, brinjal at Rs 60-80 per Kg, potato at Rs 30-45 per Kg, chilli at Rs 100-120 per Kg, Gourds Rs 40-60 per Kg, cucumber Rs 60-8- per Kg, tomato Rs 80 per Kg and pointed gourd at Rs 40-60 per Kg.

According to vegetable sellers, local production of vegetables is inadequate to meet the demand and we have to bring these from other areas – as a result, prices are higher.
