The Agartala-Sabroom local passenger train derailed on Saturday in Tripura after encountering an obstruction on the tracks, but no injuries were reported. The incident shed light on safety concerns and raised questions about the negligence of railway workers and supervisors.
The mishap occurred when the train, bound for Sabroom in southern Tripura, struck a stone-laden trolley that had been mistakenly left on the single-track railway. The driver of the train, displaying quick thinking, halted the train near Gautamnagar, close to the Bishalghar rail station in the Sepahijala district. However, the trolley became lodged in the train, causing one of its front wheels to derail.
At the time of the incident, approximately 1,000 passengers were on board the train. Sajal Paul, a passenger, described the sudden stop and jolt caused by the collision, which led to passengers hurriedly disembarking from the train.
Railway officials, along with personnel from the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF), promptly arrived at the scene, located 27 km south of Agartala.
Passengers expressed their concerns about the apparent negligence of both the workers responsible for leaving the stone-laden trolley on the track and the station master at Bishalghar railway station. Safety protocols and the reasons behind such oversights during train operations were called into question.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of maintaining safety procedures and track conditions to ensure the well-being of passengers and the smooth operation of railway services. Authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
