Tripura’s 20-year-old judoka, Asmita Dey, emerged victorious at the Junior Asia Cup Judo Championship in Macau, China, on Sunday, securing a remarkable gold medal for India. Displaying exceptional talent, Dey dominated Group D during the preliminary round, defeating Hong Kong’s Suet Yiu Tang with prowess.
Dey’s journey to victory commenced with an impressive display in Group D during the preliminary round, where she triumphed over Hong Kong’s Suet Yiu Tang. Her outstanding performance earned her a well-deserved bye in the main opening round, setting the stage for further success.
In the semi-final, the Indian judoka, who had previously won silver at the Asian Open 2023 in Kuwait City and a bronze at the Asian Junior Championships in 2022, demonstrated her determination and focus in the 48 kg category and overcame Australia’s Ashlyn Do. Undeterred by the challenge, Dey continued her winning streak, defeating another Australian, Anneliese Fielder, in the final clash to secure the coveted gold medal.
Celebrating her accomplishment, Asmita Dey’s former coach, Manik Lal De, expressed his joy and pride in her success. Alongside Dey’s remarkable achievement, Unnati Sharma (63kg) and Arun Kumar (73kg) also claimed gold medals in their respective categories, contributing to India’s triumphant haul of three gold’s, one silver, and one bronze in the Junior Asia Cup Judo Championships.
