Saradindu Chowdhury, Secretary to the Education department, announced that the admission process in all General Degree Colleges is currently in progress in accordance with the guidelines of the New Education Policy (NEP). The admission process began on June 16 and will continue until July 14.

As part of the NEP implementation, the colleges will now offer four-year degree courses to students. In the event that a student discontinues their studies before completing the course, they will be provided with a certificate acknowledging their participation. Additionally, in line with the NEP, student performance will be evaluated based on attendance records, he said in a press conference held at the Secretariat on Tuesday.

Chowdhury further revealed that the NEP has been implemented in 25 General Degree Colleges, Tripura Central University, and Maharaja Bir Bikram University, starting from the Academic Year 2023-24.

A total of 28,342 seats are available in the 25 colleges, with this year’s admissions receiving a remarkable response of 49,662 applications. The admission process will be merit-based, granting seats to students based on their academic achievements. However, for those students who were unable to submit their applications due to various reasons, provisions for admission through spot rounds will be made available, as confirmed by the Secretary.

Furthermore, the state government has already taken measures for the development of infrastructure in various degree colleges. An expenditure of Rs. 8.40 crore has been allocated for the beautification and renovation of Maharaja Bir Bikram College. Moreover, a project worth Rs. 40 crore has been initiated under the Subarna Jayanti Tripura Nirman Yojana for the development of Netaji Subhash Mahavidyalaya.

The press conference was attended by N.C. Sharma, Director of Higher Education, who joined Chowdhury in addressing the gathered reporters and sharing pertinent information about the ongoing admission process and the government’s plans for college infrastructure development.

The implementation of the New Education Policy and the ongoing admission process signify a significant step towards the enhancement of the higher education system in the state, providing students with expanded opportunities and improved educational facilities.
