The Center has asked state governments to continuously monitor the prices of Tur and Urad pulses. It also directed for verifying the stock positions and taking strict action against those violating the stock limits order.
 
In this regard, Additional Secretary of Department of Consumer Affairs Nidhi Khare today chaired a meeting with State Food and Civil Supplies Departments, Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) and State Warehousing Corporations (SWCs). She also reviewed stock disclosure of Tur and Urad and the implementation of stock limits by the state governments in the meeting. The Department of Consumer Affairs had imposed stock limits on Tur and Urad pulses on 2nd of June to prevent hoarding and unscrupulous speculation and also to improve affordability to the consumers.
 
Under the order, stock limits have been prescribed for Tur and Urad until 31st October of this year for all states and Union Territories. The department has said that stock limits applicable to each of the pulses individually are 200 Million Tonnes for wholesalers; five Million Tonnes for retailers; five Million Tonnes at each retail outlet and 200 Million Tonnes at depot for big chain retailers. Earlier in this year, the Department had also deputed 12 senior officers to visit various places in the States of Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu to take stock of ground reality.
