New Delhi, June 6 (UNI) Indian Navy on Tuesday carried out a successful test to destroy an underwater target using indigenously built heavyweight torpedo.

Announcing the news on Twitter, the Indian Navy said, successful engagement of an underwater target by an indigenously developed Heavy Weight Torpedo was a significant milestone in the Indian Navys and Defence Research and Development Organisation, (DRDOs quest for accurate delivery of ordnance on target in the underwater domain.

This showcases the Indian Navys commitment to future proof combat readiness, Navy spokesperson tweeted.

The Indian Navy also shared a clip which showed a long multi-coloured object floating on the surface of the ocean. The object then suddenly exploded as the torpedo hit.

According to officials, the missile is capable of hitting its target up to a distance of 300 km.

This is the second sea-level test in a fortnight. Last month, the Navy tested an advanced missile from the destroyer INS Mormugao.

The missile, known as Sea Skimming, hit the target floating in the sea from below.
