Violence erupted and students of two colleges resorted to pitched battles over the screening of Kerala Story on Friday in Ambedkar College at Fatikroy.  As the students of two separate colleges took on each other with all their might, resulting in extensive vandalism and injuries- situations turned highly volatile and police with TSR jawans had a tough time to bring the situation under control.

The violent confrontation was triggered by a dispute over the screening of the film “Kerala Story” and the choice of venue for the event.

Tensions had been simmering for days as Fatikray College decided to screen “Kerala Story” at the college auditorium on June 6. However, this decision was met with opposition from a faction of students from Ramakrishna College in Kailasahar. They demanded that the film be shown in an open area for public viewing rather than within the confines of the college auditorium.

On the fateful day, students from Ramakrishna College arrived at Ambedkar College to present a deputation to the principal, hoping to address their concerns regarding the film screening. It was during this encounter that the situation rapidly escalated into chaos. Fatikray College students alleged that the students from Ramakrishna College physically assaulted them after they voiced objections to outsiders entering the premises and behaving inappropriately with female students. In the absence of the college principal, certain individuals reportedly vandalized the principal’s office.

Conversely, the students of Ramakrishna College countered these accusations with their own complaint. They claimed that the students of Fatikray College initiated the violence when they attempted to present their deputation regarding the screening of “Kerala Story” as previously agreed upon.

As the situation spiralled out of control, local law enforcement authorities were promptly informed. A large police force, including personnel from Fatikray police station and the TSR team, swiftly arrived at the scene to restore order. Despite their efforts, numerous individuals from both sides sustained injuries during the clashes.

The clash has raised serious concerns about the safety and security of students within educational institutions. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for dialogue and peaceful resolution when addressing differences of opinion.

Ambedkar College authorities have expressed deep regret over the incident and have assured a thorough investigation into the matter. The college administration is expected to take appropriate action against those found responsible for instigating violence and vandalism.

Meanwhile, local residents and parents are demanding heightened security measures to ensure the safety of students and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
