In a significant move to bolster the cricket landscape in the state, the Tripura Cricket Association (TCA) has appointed former South African all-rounder Lance Klusener as a consultant. Klusener will join as the head of cricket operations ahead of the upcoming Indian domestic season, bringing his wealth of experience to support the development of cricket in Tripura.
According to TCA sources, Klusener is scheduled to arrive in Agartala on Saturday, where he will formally sign the contract. The former South African cricketer has previously worked as the batting coach for South Africa and Zimbabwe. He also served as the head coach of Afghanistan during the 2021 T20 World Cup. Klusener, aged 51, played 49 Tests and 171 ODIs for South Africa and has previously worked as a consultant coach for Delhi during the 2018-19 season.
The appointment of Lance Klusener is expected to greatly benefit both male and female cricketers in Tripura. With his vast experience in international cricket, Klusener will bring valuable insights and expertise to enhance the skill levels of the state’s cricketers. His initial contract with the TCA is set for 100 days, during which time he will work closely with the players and coaching staff.
In addition to his responsibilities with the TCA, Klusener is also expected to meet Wriddhiman Saha, the Indian international cricketer who captained Tripura in the previous season and has renewed his contract for another season. The interaction between the two experienced cricketers is anticipated to further strengthen the team and contribute to its progress.
It is worth noting that the Tripura Cricket Association had released an advertisement for a coaching role in March, inviting applications from interested candidates. Among the high-profile applicants were former Australian cricketer and Sri Lankan coach Dav Whatmore, as well as Lance Klusener, who have responded to the advertisement. However, it is Klusener who has now been appointed to the prestigious position of head of cricket operations for the TCA.
The appointment of Lance Klusener reflects the TCA’s commitment to elevating the standard of cricket in Tripura and providing opportunities for players to learn from esteemed cricketing personalities. The association aims to harness Klusener’s expertise and pave the way for the state’s cricketers to reach new heights in their careers.
