After enduring more than 25 years without access to purified drinking water, over 300 families, predominantly belonging to minority communities, in the Betarban area of southwestern Agartala can finally breathe a sigh of relief. The Chairperson of Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC), Dipak Majumder, performed the auspicious ‘Bhumi Pujan’ ceremony this morning, marking the commencement of an Integrated Resource Planning (IRP) project that aims to provide purified water to the entire area. Once completed, the project will supply 10,000 liters of purified water to meet the needs of the residents.

According to sources within the AMC, a total of 26 IRP projects will be implemented in and around Agartala to address the water supply issues faced by various areas of the capital city. The central government has sanctioned a budget of Rs 182 crores for these projects as part of a comprehensive mission to improve water infrastructure. The funds will be utilized to create new water sources and ensure adequate water supply.

The ‘Bhumi Pujan’ ceremony held today, presided over by AMC Chairperson Dipak Majumder, marked the initiation of the process to establish a dedicated water source for the Betarban area. The event was attended by corporators Pradip Chanda and Hiralal Debnath, who expressed their support for the long-overdue project.

Dipak Majumder, while addressing the gathering, emphasized the significance of the IRP project and its positive impact on the lives of over 300 families in the area. He assured the residents that their suffering and inconvenience related to water scarcity would soon be alleviated. The project aims to provide a consistent supply of purified water, ensuring a healthier and more convenient lifestyle for the residents of Betarban.

The implementation of the IRP projects is a crucial step towards resolving water supply issues in Agartala. The AMC remains committed to completing the project within the stipulated timeframe, utilizing the sanctioned funds efficiently. The corporation aims to prioritize the welfare of its citizens and provide essential amenities, such as purified drinking water, to all areas of the capital.

The initiation of the IRP project in the Betarban area is a milestone achievement, bringing hope and relief to the residents who have been deprived of this basic necessity for an extended period. The AMC endeavors to continue its efforts to address water-related challenges in other parts of the city, ensuring equitable access to clean and purified water for all its residents, AMC sources said.
