In a determined effort to eradicate the menace of drug abuse in Tripura, the Tripura State Legal Services Authority (TSLA) launched a new project called MUKTI on Friday. The project was inaugurated by Tripura High Court Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, Executive Chairman of Tripura State Legal Services Authority Justice T Amarnath Goud, and Chairman of High Court Legal Services Committee Justice Arindam Lodh. The launch event was attended by eminent lawyers, officials from various departments, and members of the police administration.

Highlighting the urgency of tackling the issue, Chief Justice Singh expressed concern over the alarming rise in drug trafficking and drug abuse among the youth, children, and adolescents. He emphasized that drug abuse has severe implications, adversely affecting the health and economy of the state. The Chief Justice pointed out that news reports of drug seizures, including cannabis, appear in newspapers almost daily, making it a top priority for the state and society to address this pressing issue.

Chief Justice Singh explained the objectives of Project “Mukti,” stating that it aims to serve the society by raising widespread awareness among youth, children, and women who are either victims of drug consumption or affected by a family member’s drug addiction. The project intends to educate the community about the dangers of drug abuse and create a support system for rehabilitation and recovery.

In his address, Chief Justice Singh suggested the establishment of more de-addiction centers across the state, making them easily accessible and affordable for people from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. This would facilitate the rehabilitation of a larger number of drug addicts and provide them with the necessary support for recovery.

Justice Goud, in his speech, highlighted the geographical location of Tripura as a contributing factor to the increased drug menace. He emphasized the importance of united efforts to combat drug abuse, stating that Tripura, being surrounded by neighboring countries, is particularly vulnerable to drug-related issues. Justice Goud also warned about the adverse effects of drug abuse, citing the spread of HIV as a consequence of the drug menace.

Expressing his concerns about the prevailing situation of drug abuse in the state, Justice Lodh mentioned the ongoing cultivation of cannabis in suburban areas. Despite regular seizures by the police, the drug trade continues to thrive in Tripura. Justice Lodh recommended the engagement of Special Police Officers (SPOs) in identified areas to prevent drug use and trafficking. He emphasized that Project Mukti would create awareness among the public about the legal provisions, policies, programs, and schemes related to narcotic drugs, as well as educate them about the harmful effects of drug abuse.

Justice Lodh also stressed the need for collaboration with Panchayats (local self-government bodies) and local bodies to prevent the illicit cultivation of drugs, particularly ganja.

The launch of Project “MUKTI” by the Tripura State Legal Services Authority signifies a collective effort to combat drug abuse and create awareness among the general population. By addressing legal provisions, implementing preventive measures, and promoting rehabilitation, the project aims to free the state from the clutches of drug addiction and ensure a safer and healthier future for Tripura.
