The state of Tripura in India is set to get a Central Veterinary University soon, according to Animal Resource Development Minister Sudhangshu Das. The minister made the announcement during the World Veterinary Day event in Agartala on Saturday, which was organised by the Tripura Veterinary Council with the theme “Promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusiveness in the veterinary profession.”

Speaking at the event, Das expressed concern over the issues being faced by the existing College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry at RK Nagar, which is located in the outskirts of Agartala. “During my visit to the college recently, I came to know of various problems being faced by the students. The issues pertain to affiliation of the college and some others,” he said.

He added that students of the college have to travel outside the state to pursue postgraduate courses. In response to these challenges, Das has requested the Veterinary Council of India to set up a Central Veterinary University in Tripura. The president of the Veterinary Council of India, Dr Umesh Chandra Sharma, has reportedly responded positively to the request.

According to Das, Sharma has assured him of the establishment of the university in the state and of helping Tripura students to pursue postgraduate courses. A meeting with Union Minister Purushottam Rupala and members of the Veterinary Council of India will be held in early May to discuss the laying of the foundation stone for the university.

The Animal Resource Development Minister highlighted the potential of the animal husbandry sector in the state, saying that its development could reduce the unemployment rate and eliminate the shortage of milk, eggs, and meat. He added that agriculture and animal husbandry play an important role in India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The minister also praised the veterinary doctors for their commendable work in treating animals, stating that they provide treatment to living beings that are incapable of expressing their problems. “These veterinarians are considered the best doctors in our society,” he said.

The establishment of a Central Veterinary University in Tripura is expected to provide much-needed support to the state’s animal husbandry sector, helping to improve the quality of education and training for students and professionals in the field.
