India captain Shubman Gill expressed excitement about returning to New Zealand, where he made his international debut in 2019. Ahead of the ODI series at Eden Park, Gill highlighted the team’s confidence, challenging ground dimensions and opportunities for young players.

India captain Shubman Gill has expressed his excitement about returning to New Zealand ahead of the upcoming One Day International (ODI) series, recalling the memorable beginning of his international cricket career in the country. The 26-year-old batter said he had several fond memories of New Zealand and hoped to return home with more positive experiences after the month-long tour.

Speaking in a video shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on its official X account, Gill reflected on his international debut against New Zealand at Seddon Park in Hamilton on January 31, 2019. He said visiting the country again brought back special memories and made him feel particularly excited ahead of the opening ODI at Auckland’s Eden Park.

“I’m here at Eden Park, you know, always, always very exciting. I made my international debut here in New Zealand, so I have a lot of good memories here. I feel very good whenever I come here, and hopefully, you know, when I go back after a month, I will take a lot of good memories from here,” Gill said.

However, the Indian skipper acknowledged that playing at Eden Park could present some tactical challenges because of the ground’s unusual dimensions. He pointed out that the stadium’s distinctive boundary measurements would require the team to carefully assess field placements and identify the most effective areas to defend.

According to Gill, adjusting to the ground’s dimensions would be important for India’s bowling and fielding strategies. He expressed hope that the players would understand the conditions quickly and identify the right fielding positions during the matches.

“The dimensions are a bit weird, and I think it will be a challenge for us to be able to find the right placement for the fielders. Hopefully, you know, we can find those pockets sooner rather than later,” he explained.

Gill also discussed how Eden Park’s relatively short straight boundaries could influence batting strategies. With the straight boundary measuring approximately 50-55 metres, the venue could encourage batters to attempt big shots, particularly against spin bowling.

He noted that every batter approaches a match differently and develops individual plans according to the opposition and match situation.

“I feel that as a batsman, every batter goes in there with a plan, especially if you are facing the spinner. But I think it’s very player-specific. Every player has their own plans. But for me, it’s definitely very tempting, you know, seeing the straight boundary only getting 50-55 metres,” Gill said.

The Indian captain also has an impressive ODI record against New Zealand. He has scored 758 runs in 15 innings against the Black Caps at an average of 63.17 and a strike rate of 102.85. His performances against the side underline his familiarity with the opposition and his experience in international conditions.

Beyond individual performances, Gill emphasised that the upcoming series would be important for strengthening confidence within the Indian squad, particularly among younger players. He believes that performing successfully in challenging overseas conditions would provide valuable experience and reinforce the team’s belief in its ability to compete against any opposition.

The skipper said that every Indian team had the potential to defeat strong opponents, regardless of the conditions or the players available. He added that victories in New Zealand would give emerging players greater confidence and demonstrate the team’s depth ahead of future international assignments, including the World Cup.

“I feel that any Indian team that plays on the ground is capable of defeating any team. Young players will get a lot of confidence if they perform here. And we will get a lot of confidence that if we don’t get the team we want for the World Cup for any reason, then our team can defeat any other team in any condition,” Gill stated.

He further stressed that winning the ODI series in New Zealand would provide a significant psychological boost to the entire squad.

“So, if we win the series here, it will be a big confidence booster for us,” he added.
