CPI(M) candidates and workers in Tripura’s Mohanpur were allegedly attacked during nomination filing for the civic polls, leaving 15 injured. A party delegation met West Tripura DM Dr. Vishal Kumar, demanding immediate security intervention, strict action against ruling-party miscreants, and a peaceful election process across the sub-division.
Severe political tension erupted across Mohanpur on Monday after suspected miscreants allegedly attacked Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidates, leaders, and supporters during their attempt to file nomination papers for the upcoming urban local body elections. The violent assault reportedly left at least 15 CPI(M) members injured, with two critically wounded individuals admitted to the Mohanpur Sub-Divisional Hospital for emergency treatment.
Following the violence, a high-level CPI(M) delegation met with the District Magistrate of West Tripura, Dr. Vishal Kumar, seeking prompt administrative intervention, enhanced security deployments, and a thorough probe into the orchestrated disruption.
The delegation was headed by senior CPI(M) leader and CITU State Secretary Shankar Prasad Datta, alongside the Bamutia MLA and several affected candidates. Addressing media personnel after the meeting, Datta outlined the sequence of events and voiced deep alarm regarding the deteriorating law-and-order apparatus in the state, specifically highlighting the threat posed to opposition candidates attempting to exercise their constitutional rights.
According to party representatives, CPI(M) candidates designated for the Mohanpur Municipal Council elections had gathered alongside party workers at Fatikchhara around 11:00 AM on Monday. The group was organizing a peaceful procession bound for the Mohanpur Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) office to submit their official nomination documents. However, before the march could commence, a large group of armed miscreants intercepted the gathering.
Datta alleged that the attackers—identified by the party as ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) affiliates—carried out an unprovoked assault using sticks, iron rods, and blunt objects. The sudden confrontation led to widespread panic, leaving 15 party members injured in the melee. While local police personnel were stationed nearby, party leaders claimed that the inadequate police contingent failed to contain the mob or deter the perpetrators. Comrades on the scene eventually rescued the injured workers and transferred them to the local hospital.
The Left front further alleged that ruling party cadres had been congregating around the Mohanpur SDM office premises since October 31 to actively intimidate opposition aspirants and stall the nomination process. Despite formal grievances previously submitted to the State Election Commission regarding the aggressive occupation of the administrative complex, the opposition alleged that no proactive security protocols had been implemented.
