Four suspected Bangladeshi nationals were detained in Guwahati’s Dispur area for document verification as Assam Police intensified checks on suspected foreign nationals. The latest action follows recent operations at Paltan Bazar and hotels, with authorities examining identities, nationality and legal status.

Four people suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals were detained by Assam Police in Guwahati for questioning, officials said on Thursday, as authorities continued verification drives aimed at identifying suspected foreign nationals allegedly staying in the city without valid documents.

The four individuals were detected in the Dispur area during an ongoing police verification operation. Following their detection, they were taken into custody for questioning and document verification. Police officials said their identities, nationality and legal status are being examined before any further action is taken.

Authorities are also checking the documents available with the four individuals and examining the circumstances surrounding their arrival and stay in Guwahati. Police said the nationality of the detainees would be established only after the verification process is completed.

The latest detention is part of intensified checking operations being conducted in different parts of Guwahati. Police have been carrying out verification drives to identify people suspected of residing in the city without valid travel, identity or other required documents.

Officials said further details regarding the four persons detained in Dispur would be made available after the verification process is completed. No final determination regarding their nationality or legal status has been announced at this stage.

The latest operation comes days after several other police actions in Guwahati involving people suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals.

In one recent operation, five suspected Bangladeshi nationals were intercepted by police at Paltan Bazar railway station while they were travelling on the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Express. Following the interception, police conducted further inquiries into their movements and accommodation in the city.

The investigation subsequently led police to a hotel identified as Vintage Home, where the five individuals were allegedly staying. Police also arrested the hotel owner, two managers and another person on allegations of facilitating the stay of the suspected foreign nationals.

The authorities are examining the circumstances under which the individuals were accommodated and whether anyone assisted them in arranging their stay or movement. The action has also brought the role of accommodation providers under scrutiny as part of the wider verification exercise.

In another operation, 13 people suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals were detained from the Shanti Hotel in Guwahati during the continuing verification drive. Police initiated proceedings concerning their legal status and said steps were being taken for their expulsion under applicable provisions of the Immigrants Act.

The series of operations comes amid increased efforts by Guwahati Police to verify the identities and nationality of individuals suspected of staying in the city without valid documentation. Police teams are checking available identity and travel documents and gathering information to determine whether those detained have lawful permission to remain in India.

Authorities are also examining whether suspected foreign nationals may have received assistance from local facilitators in arranging accommodation, transportation or other logistical support. Such inquiries are aimed at determining the circumstances behind the presence and movement of the individuals under investigation.

However, officials have maintained that detention for questioning does not by itself establish a person’s nationality or legal status. The status of individuals taken into custody will depend on document verification and other evidence gathered during the investigation.

For the four people detained in Dispur, the verification process remains underway. Police are expected to share additional information after their identities, nationality and documents have been examined.

The latest action reflects the continuing verification campaign across Guwahati, with police focusing on areas where authorities suspect that people may be residing without valid documentation. Further developments are awaited as the investigation and verification process continues.
