Sepahijala Zoological Park in Tripura welcomes three healthy Royal Bengal tiger cubs born on August 30-31, raising its tiger population to seven. Zoo officials are closely monitoring the new born as they receive special care during their crucial early weeks.

Three Royal Bengal tiger cubs have brought fresh cheer to Tripura’s Sepahijala Zoological Park, with the new born adding to the growing tiger family at the popular wildlife destination. Born on August 30-31, the three cubs are reported to be healthy and doing well under the close supervision of zoo officials and animal-care experts.

With the arrival of the latest litter, the tiger population at Sepahijala Zoological Park has increased to seven. Zoo authorities, however, are treating the birth not only as a moment of celebration but also as a major responsibility, as the early weeks of a newborn tiger’s life are considered particularly sensitive.

Zoo Director Siddhartha Debbarma said all three cubs are doing well and that the authorities are making continuous efforts to ensure their survival and healthy development.

“All three are doing well. We are making every effort to observe and monitor them closely so that all of them survive,” Debbarma said.

According to zoo officials, neonatal mortality remains a concern in captive breeding programmes, making close monitoring and special care essential during the initial stage of the cubs’ lives. The newborns are currently being kept in the night shelter, where they remain protected from rain and other possible risks.

The cubs are allowed to stay with their mother only for limited periods. The arrangement has been made to provide the newborns with a safer environment while enabling veterinary and animal-care teams to keep a close watch on their health, feeding and overall development.

Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) R.K. Samal said the same tiger pair had produced three cubs last year as well. Although one cub from that litter died, the other two survived and have since grown into healthy young tigers. They are currently housed in a separate enclosure at the zoological park.

“This year again, the pair has given birth to three tiger cubs, and they are quite healthy,” Samal said.

The latest births have therefore brought renewed optimism among the zoo authorities, particularly after the successful rearing of the two surviving cubs from last year’s litter. The repeated breeding success of the tiger pair is also being viewed as a positive development for the zoo’s captive wildlife management efforts.

Samal said the zoo had earlier received a pair of Royal Bengal tigers, along with a pair of leopards and several other animals. Since then, the tiger pair has produced six cubs over two successive years. Five of those cubs are currently alive, including the two youngsters from last year and the three newly born cubs.

The development adds to the importance of Sepahijala Zoological Park as a destination for wildlife conservation and public awareness in Tripura. The zoo houses a range of animals and attracts visitors interested in wildlife and nature. The addition of three tiger cubs is expected to further increase interest in the zoological park once the newborns become strong enough to be seen by visitors.

For the time being, however, the cubs will remain away from public view as they pass through their delicate early stage. Zoo officials are prioritising their health and survival rather than immediate public display.

The authorities are also keeping a close watch on the mother and her interaction with the cubs. Such monitoring is considered important during the early period following birth, when the health and development of newborn animals can change quickly.

Samal expressed hope that once the cubs grow sufficiently and are ready to be introduced to visitors, they will become a major attraction at Sepahijala. Their presence could provide an additional draw for tourists, wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers visiting the zoological park.

The birth of the three Royal Bengal tiger cubs also marks another encouraging development in the zoo’s efforts to maintain and expand its tiger population through breeding and careful animal management.

For now, the newest members of Sepahijala’s tiger family remain under close observation, with officials focused on ensuring that the cubs receive the care and protection they need during their first crucial weeks.

As the three tiny tigers continue to grow under the watchful eyes of their mother and zoo experts, their successful survival would mark another positive chapter in the conservation story of Sepahijala Zoological Park.
