West Tripura MP Biplab Kumar Deb engaged with UNDP leadership at UN Headquarters in New York, discussing India’s development priorities, Sustainable Development Goals and the Viksit Bharat @2047 roadmap during a 15-MP parliamentary delegation visit.

West Tripura Lok Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb participated in a significant international engagement at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, where a 15-member Indian parliamentary delegation interacted with Kanni Wignaraja, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The interaction formed part of the Indian delegation’s engagements during its visit to the United Nations General Assembly. The delegation brought together Members of Parliament from different political parties and states, reflecting India’s political and geographic diversity and the country’s democratic representation at the international forum.

Before beginning their General Assembly assignments, the MPs paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at his statue on the UN campus on Monday. The delegation was also briefed by India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, P Harish, who provided an overview of India’s engagement with the United Nations and its various initiatives at the global body.

During the meeting with Kanni Wignaraja, the parliamentarians discussed the work and priorities of the UN Development Programme in India. The interaction also focused on the role of elected representatives in advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and strengthening cooperation on development-related priorities.

Biplab Kumar Deb highlighted India’s developmental vision and shared details of the country’s roadmap towards Viksit Bharat @2047, the national vision of transforming India into a developed nation by 2047. He emphasised India’s long-term development priorities and the importance of inclusive growth, social empowerment and effective governance in achieving the ambitious national goals.

According to Deb, Wignaraja appreciated the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and acknowledged the guiding principle of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas” as an approach to inclusive growth. The discussions underlined the importance of ensuring that development reaches different sections of society while maintaining a focus on sustainable and equitable progress.

The interaction also provided an opportunity to discuss India’s approach to sustainable development and its alignment with global development frameworks. UNDP representatives expressed interest in India’s experiences in areas including sustainable growth, social inclusion and governance reforms.

Deb stressed the importance of India’s role in shaping global discussions on development and equity. He noted that the country’s development journey and its long-term vision can contribute to broader international conversations on sustainable and inclusive development.

The Viksit Bharat @2047 roadmap envisages comprehensive progress across several key sectors, including education, healthcare, infrastructure, technology and social empowerment. The engagement at the UN Headquarters highlighted the effort to connect India’s domestic development priorities with international frameworks such as the Sustainable Development Goals.

The 15-member delegation included MPs from several political parties and states. Apart from Biplab Kumar Deb, the BJP representatives included Banshilal Gurjar from Madhya Pradesh, C P Joshi and Mahima Kumari Mewar from Rajasthan, Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri from Karnataka and Sikander Kumar from Himachal Pradesh.

The Congress Party was represented by Rahul Kaswan from Rajasthan and Anil Kumar Yadav from Telangana. Gumma Thanuja Rani of the YSR Congress represented Andhra Pradesh. Other members included LK Sudhish of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam from Tamil Nadu, Asit Mal of the Trinamool Congress from West Bengal, Priya Saroj of the Samajwadi Party from Uttar Pradesh, Lovely Anand of the Janata Dal (United) from Bihar, Sanjay Yadav of the Rashtriya Janata Dal from Bihar and Rajabhau Waje of the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) from Maharashtra.

C P Joshi, who heads the Parliament Committee on Petitions, also addressed the Second Committee of the UN General Assembly, which deals with economic and financial matters.
