Agartala Smart City roads will receive preliminary blacktopping by October 10 to make them motorable before the festive season. Authorities have set deadlines for completing the remaining 23-km road works by July or August 2027 amid concerns over traffic congestion.
Agartala Smart City Limited (ASCL) has been given a deadline to make all city roads currently undergoing maintenance and repair works motorable by October 10, ahead of the upcoming festive season. The roads will initially receive a preliminary blacktopping coat, while the remaining construction and development work is expected to be completed by July or August 2027, according to a senior official of the Urban Development Department.
Urban Development Department Secretary Dr Milind Ramteke told Tripura Times that the administration has decided to accelerate work on the roads under Agartala Smart City projects in view of the approaching festival season. He said the Smart City works cover around 23 kilometres of roads across Agartala.
According to Dr Ramteke, the existing deadline for completing the overall Agartala Smart City road works has been fixed for July or August 2027. However, considering the movement of people and vehicles during the festive period, authorities have now decided that the roads should be made motorable much earlier.
“A time limit has been awarded for Agartala Smart City works which accounts for 23 kilometers of road. The present time limit has been fixed for July or August 2027. However, given the festival time in the offing, it has been decided that all the roads shall be made motorable by October 10 next,” the official said.
He further stated that at least one layer of blacktopping would be provided on the affected stretches within the stipulated period so that commuters can use the roads more conveniently during the festive season. The remaining components of the road projects will continue thereafter and are expected to be completed within the revised timeframe.
Dr Ramteke has been personally monitoring the progress of several ongoing Agartala Smart City road projects. Over the past few weeks, he has conducted repeated onsite inspections to assess the status of construction and encourage faster completion. His inspections have also taken place during night hours to monitor the progress of work and ensure that the projects move forward efficiently.
CEO of Agartala Smart City Limited Dr GS Nayak has also been regularly visiting different project sites to review the ongoing works and monitor implementation.
Road maintenance and repair works in several parts of Agartala have emerged as a major concern for residents and commuters in recent weeks. Several stretches have remained dug up for extended periods because of ongoing construction, affecting the smooth movement of vehicles.
The slow progress of the projects has also contributed to significant traffic congestion, particularly during office hours and other peak periods. In some areas, a substantial portion of the carriageway has remained unusable because of construction activity, resulting in traffic snarls and difficulties for daily commuters.
The administration’s decision to introduce a short-term deadline for making the roads motorable is expected to address some of these concerns ahead of the festive season. Agartala witnesses a substantial influx of visitors during the major four-day festival, with lakhs of pandal hoppers travelling across the city from different parts of Tripura and other parts of the country.

With preliminary blacktopping planned by October 10, authorities are now focusing on restoring smoother vehicular movement while continuing the larger Agartala Smart City road development works toward their scheduled completion in 2027.
