Today, in our special series, we bring you an instance of how this vision has been translated into creation of the post of Chief of Defence Staff.
Earlier, India’s three armed services – Army, Navy and the Air Force – planned, trained, procured and advised the government separately. Proposals for greater jointness had been made repeatedly since the Kargil Review Committee of 1999 and the Group of Ministers that followed it, but no single officer held authority across all three services. On the 15th of August 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his Independence Day address, announced the creation of the post of Chief of Defence Staff from the ramparts of the Red Fort. Prime Minister Modi said this will lead to better coordination among the three services.
The Cabinet approved the decision in December 2019, along with a new Department of Military Affairs within the Ministry of Defence for the CDS to head. Talking to Akashvani News, retired Lt General Sanjay Kulkarni said the appointment of CDS made it possible for the government to have one point of contact for advice on all miltary matters.
After the formation of the post of CDS, all three forces have now got effective leadership at the top level.
