Razaullah entered the contest with limited international experience and only eight first-class matches to his name. However, his debut quickly became memorable when he walked out to bat with Pakistan struggling at 312 for seven and facing the prospect of an innings defeat.
Instead of allowing England’s attack to dominate, Razaullah took the aggressive route. He smashed nine sixes during his whirlwind innings, equalling the record for the most sixes by a batter in a Test innings on debut. His fearless approach against England’s fast bowlers, including Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue, helped Pakistan move away from a difficult position and gave the visitors renewed hope in the match.
Razaullah’s batting display was particularly striking because his primary role is as a fast bowler. Before making his Test debut, he had already shown promise with the bat in domestic cricket. Born in Mardan in Peshawar, the youngster made his first-class debut in November 2025. Among his early domestic performances was a century for Peshawar while opening the innings.
His ability with the ball also made an immediate impression at Edgbaston. Razaullah dismissed England batting great Joe Root with only his fourth delivery in Test cricket. Although his bowling figures later became expensive, the early breakthrough demonstrated the potential that prompted Pakistan to hand him an opportunity during a period of major change.
His selection came after Pakistan underwent a significant overhaul following their defeat at Lord’s. Seven players were dropped and two coaches were removed, leaving Razaullah with little time to adjust to the demands of international cricket.
Rather than being overwhelmed by the occasion, the youngster embraced it. Speaking after his performance, Razaullah said he enjoyed the standing ovation and was simply relishing the moment.
His approach against England’s pace attack was similarly fearless. Razaullah explained that he was selective about the deliveries he attacked and refused to be intimidated by pace. He specifically targeted hard-length deliveries from Archer, believing there was no reason to fear when representing Pakistan.
His confidence was reflected in his powerful strokeplay. Gus Atkinson was hit for three consecutive sixes, while Archer was also struck for three sixes in one over. By the time Razaullah was dismissed for 81, Pakistan had transformed a precarious position into one that gave England a fourth-innings chase to complete.
The youngster’s memorable debut was built around a simple philosophy: trust his ability, attack the right deliveries and enjoy the opportunity. Razaullah said he believed that if he could face around 50 balls, he would have a chance of producing a positive result.
