BJP urges Election Commission to postpone Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls until after Tripura Village Committee elections, citing the involvement of Booth Level Officers and Booth Level Agents in election-related duties ahead of the September 28 polls.
A delegation of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday approached election officials in Tripura, seeking postponement of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls until after the upcoming Village Committee (VC) elections.
The BJP delegation, led by Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee, met officials at the office of the Chief Electoral Officer in Agartala and submitted its request regarding the timing of the SIR exercise. The party said postponing the revision process would help ensure that election-related duties are carried out smoothly and that the electoral roll revision receives adequate attention.
According to Bhattacharjee, the SIR process is scheduled to commence from September 5. At the same time, the State Election Commission has announced that elections to the Village Committees will be held on September 28.
The BJP leader said the timing of the two electoral exercises could place additional responsibilities on Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and Booth Level Agents (BLAs), who are expected to remain engaged with election-related work during the Village Committee polls.
“On behalf of BJP, we requested the Election Commission of India to postpone the SIR process in view of the VC elections,” Bhattacharjee said while speaking to reporters after the meeting.
The BJP delegation argued that the postponement would allow election officials and other personnel involved in the electoral process to focus on the Village Committee elections before taking up the intensive revision of voter lists.
The Special Intensive Revision is aimed at reviewing and updating electoral rolls to improve their accuracy and transparency. The process generally involves verification of voter details and other electoral information, making the role of ground-level election personnel particularly important.
The Village Committee elections are also significant for local-level political representation in Tripura, particularly in areas covered by the Village Committees. With the polls scheduled for September 28, political parties are preparing for the electoral exercise while election authorities continue their preparations.
The BJP delegation expressed hope that the Election Commission would consider its request seriously and take necessary steps regarding the proposed schedule.
BJP state general secretary Bipin Debbarma and two other party representatives were also part of the delegation that met the Chief Electoral Officer’s officials.

The development comes as preparations intensify for both the SIR exercise and the Village Committee elections. The BJP’s request has placed the scheduling of the electoral roll revision and the September 28 local polls in focus, with the party stressing the need to avoid overlapping responsibilities for election personnel.
