Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) will soon launch two new departments, while the Tripura government has approved three additional units. The college has also secured major increases in UG and PG medical seats, strengthening healthcare education and medical infrastructure in the state.
Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) is set for a significant expansion in both academic and healthcare services, with the introduction of two new departments and government approval for three additional units. The development marks another major step toward strengthening medical education and healthcare infrastructure in Tripura.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, AGMC Principal Prof. (Dr.) Tapan Majumder announced that the college will soon launch the Departments of Dermatology and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. These departments are expected to enhance specialized healthcare services while providing students with improved opportunities for clinical training and advanced medical education.
In addition to these upcoming departments, the Tripura government has approved the establishment of three more departments—Emergency Medicine, Hospital Administration, and Transfusion Medicine. The approval is expected to significantly improve patient care, hospital management, emergency response systems, and blood transfusion services at the premier government medical institution.
Prof. Majumder also highlighted the remarkable expansion of postgraduate medical education at AGMC. The institution currently offers 97 postgraduate (PG) seats across various disciplines. With the latest approval, an additional 83 PG seats have been sanctioned, substantially increasing opportunities for aspiring medical specialists.
The undergraduate (UG) medical programme has also received a major boost. AGMC presently has 150 MBBS seats, while the Government of India has approved an additional 100 seats. Of these, the National Medical Commission has already granted approval for 50 seats, and confirmation for the remaining 50 seats is expected within the next week.

The expansion reflects the government’s continued commitment to improving medical education and healthcare delivery in Tripura. Increased student intake, coupled with the addition of specialized departments, is expected to address the growing demand for qualified healthcare professionals while strengthening the state’s public health system.
Once operational, the new departments will not only broaden the scope of medical education at AGMC but also improve access to specialized treatment for patients across Tripura. The latest approvals position AGMC for sustained growth, reinforcing its role as the state’s leading institution for medical education, research, and quality healthcare services.
