Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain criticized a Glasgow restaurant after its napkins displayed an incorrect map of India excluding the Northeast. Boxing Federation of India supported the demand for correction as the controversy emerged during India’s historic Commonwealth Games 2026 boxing success.
A popular Indian restaurant in Glasgow has come under intense criticism after serving guests with printed napkins featuring an incorrect outline map of India that excluded the country’s northeastern region. The controversy surfaced shortly after members of the Indian contingent visited the restaurant to celebrate their historic success at the Commonwealth Games 2026.
The restaurant, Mister Singh’s India – The Home of Curry, welcomed several Indian athletes following their outstanding performances at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. However, what was meant to be a celebratory gathering quickly turned controversial when Olympic bronze medallist and Indian boxing star Lovlina Borgohain noticed that the printed map on the restaurant’s napkins omitted the entire Northeast region of India.
Expressing her disappointment, Lovlina said that every part of India deserves equal recognition and representation. She emphasized that excluding the Northeast from the country’s map was unacceptable and called for greater sensitivity while depicting national boundaries.
“The map on the napkins is missing our North East. Every part of India is important and should be represented,” Lovlina told IANS while expressing concern over the inaccurate depiction.
The issue soon gained further attention after Boxing Federation of India (BFI) President Ajay Singh publicly supported Lovlina’s observations. Singh pointed out that the inaccuracies extended beyond the Northeast, adding that the depiction of Jammu & Kashmir was also incomplete.
Ajay Singh urged the restaurant management to immediately remove the incorrect napkins from circulation and replace them with accurate representations reflecting India’s complete territorial integrity. He stressed that such mistakes could hurt the sentiments of millions of Indians and should be corrected without delay.
As of now, Mister Singh’s India, one of Glasgow’s best-known Indian restaurants, has not released an official statement regarding the controversy. The establishment has been serving customers in Scotland for over three decades and is widely recognized for combining Punjabi culinary traditions with Scottish hospitality.
Operated by four generations of the Singh family, the restaurant has built a strong reputation among local residents, tourists, visiting dignitaries and international sports teams. Its unique blend of Punjabi heritage and Scottish culture has made it a popular dining destination in Glasgow.
The controversy comes at a time when Indian boxing has achieved unprecedented success at the Commonwealth Games 2026. The Indian boxing team produced its finest-ever performance in the history of the Games by winning 10 medals, including a record seven gold medals.
India’s gold medal winners included Preeti (54kg), Jaismine (57kg), Sakshi (51kg), Priya (60kg), Arundhati (70kg), Sachin Siwach (60kg) and Ankush Panghal (80kg). Silver medals were secured by Jadumani Singh (55kg), Lovlina Borgohain (75kg) and Narender (90+kg).

The remarkable campaign marked India’s highest-ever gold medal tally in Commonwealth Games boxing. Overall, India has secured 44 medals, comprising 11 gold, 13 silver and 20 bronze, reinforcing its status as one of the leading sporting nations at Glasgow 2026.
While India’s athletes continue to earn global recognition through exceptional performances, the incident has highlighted the importance of accurately representing the country’s geographical integrity, particularly during international events that celebrate national pride and sporting excellence.
