Tripura Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy conducted a preliminary inspection for the proposed NHIDCL NH-08 four-lane bypass from Bagma to Matabari. The project aims to reduce Udaipur traffic congestion, improve connectivity to Tripurasundari Temple, and boost tourism, while the final route remains undecided.
The Tripura Government has taken the first step toward easing the increasing traffic congestion in Udaipur by initiating a preliminary inspection for the proposed NHIDCL four-lane bypass project along National Highway-08. The proposed bypass is expected to improve connectivity, facilitate smoother travel for pilgrims visiting the renowned Tripurasundari Temple, and strengthen the region’s future infrastructure.
Tripura Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy on Saturday carried out an extensive field inspection of the proposed alignment along with senior officials from multiple government departments. The inspection focused on identifying the most suitable route, assessing land availability, and evaluating the technical feasibility before the preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR).
During the inspection, officials visited several key locations, including Bagma and adjoining areas, to examine possible alignments for the proposed bypass. Discussions were held regarding road connectivity, public convenience, future urban expansion, and the overall developmental potential of the project.
According to the minister, the proposed bypass is being planned to address the growing traffic pressure in Udaipur, particularly due to the increasing number of pilgrims and tourists visiting the sacred Tripurasundari Temple, one of the 51 Shakti Peethas in India. The project is expected to provide an alternative route, reducing congestion inside the town while ensuring faster access to the temple.
The preliminary proposal suggests that the bypass may extend from Bagma to Matabari, passing through Tepania, Jamjuri, and the vicinity of the Udaipur Railway Station before reconnecting with National Highway-08 near the temple. However, officials clarified that this remains only a tentative alignment and no final route has been approved.
The inspection was attended by Public Works Department Secretary Kiran Gitte, Chief Engineer (National Highways) Subrata Banik, PWD Chief Engineer Anup Das, Urban Development Director Dr. Tamal Majumdar, Chief Engineer of the Tripura Urban Development Authority Nitya Kumar Jamatia, NHIDCL officials, Additional District Magistrate Subhash Acharjee, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Tridip Sarkar, and other senior government representatives.
Speaking to the media after the inspection, Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy emphasized that the exercise was only the first phase of the planning process. He stated that officials are examining all possible technical, administrative, and land-related factors before the DPR is prepared.
The minister also clarified that the proposed route is currently under consideration and should not be viewed as the final decision. He stressed that the inspection was conducted to understand the ground realities and determine the most practical alignment that would serve public interest while supporting the region’s long-term development.
In a statement shared after the visit, the minister said that officials discussed the potential road direction, its impact on local residents, future communication improvements, and the possibility of the route passing through the sacred land surrounding the Tripurasundari Temple. He reiterated that these are only preliminary considerations and that the final alignment will be determined after detailed technical studies and consultations.

Once implemented, the NHIDCL bypass project is expected to significantly improve traffic management in Udaipur, reduce travel time for commuters and pilgrims, enhance connectivity to one of Tripura’s most important religious destinations, and contribute to tourism and economic growth across the Gomati district.
