Tripura’s PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana has crossed the 15 MW rooftop solar milestone, empowering 4,460 households with clean energy, reducing electricity bills, generating surplus power, and accelerating the state’s transition toward decentralized renewable energy and sustainable electricity generation.
Tripura has achieved a significant milestone in its renewable energy journey as the cumulative installed capacity of rooftop solar systems under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has crossed 15 megawatts (MW). The achievement reflects the rapid expansion of decentralized solar power generation across the state, with thousands of households now producing electricity from their rooftops while contributing surplus energy back to the power grid.
The milestone represents more than an increase in installed capacity. It marks a gradual transformation in the way electricity is generated and consumed in Tripura. Instead of relying solely on conventional power plants, ordinary households are emerging as small-scale power producers by installing rooftop solar systems that generate clean and renewable electricity for daily use.
Electricity generated through these rooftop solar panels is being used to operate household appliances such as lights, fans, refrigerators, televisions and other essential equipment. Whenever production exceeds consumption, the surplus electricity is supplied back to the state’s power grid through the net metering system, allowing consumers to earn financial benefits while strengthening the overall electricity network.
According to official figures available up to July 27, 2026, a total of 17,330 applications have been registered under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana in Tripura. Out of these, 7,846 applications have been formally submitted, representing a proposed rooftop solar capacity of 24,733 kilowatt-peak (kWp).
The state has already completed rooftop solar installations in 4,460 households, resulting in a cumulative installed capacity of 15,300 kWp, equivalent to 15.3 MW. The achievement demonstrates the growing acceptance of renewable energy among consumers and highlights the increasing role of residential solar power in Tripura’s energy mix.
Apart from promoting clean energy, the scheme has also generated substantial financial benefits for consumers. So far, 3,853 beneficiaries have received government subsidies amounting to more than ₹32.52 crore, significantly reducing the cost of installing rooftop solar systems. The subsidy support has encouraged more households to adopt solar technology while lowering their dependence on conventional electricity.
The implementation of the programme is being actively pursued by the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) under the leadership of Managing Director Biswajit Basu. The expansion of rooftop solar installations is also being guided by Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath and Power Secretary Abhishek Singh, IAS, with a focus on bringing more households under the renewable energy initiative and strengthening the state’s clean energy infrastructure.
One of the most attractive features of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is that it enables electricity consumers to become electricity producers. By generating power on their rooftops, households can significantly reduce their monthly electricity bills. In many cases, efficient power generation combined with responsible electricity consumption has enabled consumers to bring their monthly bills down to zero.
The scheme also offers an additional economic advantage. Surplus electricity produced by rooftop solar systems can be exported to the electricity grid, creating a new source of income for participating households. This unique feature encourages greater adoption of renewable energy while supporting the state’s transition towards decentralized electricity generation.
The positive impact of the programme has already become visible. During the April to June 2026 quarter, 1,679 consumers successfully reduced their electricity bills to zero after generating sufficient solar power through rooftop installations. These consumers have also become eligible to collectively earn approximately ₹5.79 lakh by supplying surplus electricity to the grid. The payment is expected to be credited to the respective consumers’ bank accounts shortly.
Officials believe the growing participation in the scheme demonstrates increasing public awareness about renewable energy and its long-term financial advantages. Every new rooftop solar installation not only reduces dependence on conventional electricity but also contributes to environmental sustainability by lowering carbon emissions and promoting clean power generation.
The programme is steadily transforming vacant rooftops into productive energy assets capable of generating electricity throughout the year using abundant sunlight. Besides reducing household expenses, rooftop solar systems are helping strengthen energy security while supporting India’s broader renewable energy objectives.
The crossing of the 15 MW milestone is being viewed as the beginning of an even larger transformation rather than the final destination. With thousands of applications still under process and increasing public interest in rooftop solar systems, officials expect the number of installations to rise considerably in the coming months.
