A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has reached New Delhi to investigate the death of Tripura DGP Anurag Dhankhar. The probe focuses on gathering evidence, examining communications, questioning key individuals, and ensuring a transparent, comprehensive, and time-bound investigation into the high-profile case.
The investigation into the sudden death of Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankhar has entered a significant new phase, with a Special Investigation Team (SIT) dispatched by the Tripura government arriving in New Delhi to pursue critical leads. The move marks an important expansion of the investigation beyond the state’s borders as authorities work to establish the circumstances surrounding the demise of the state’s highest-ranking police officer.
The SIT, constituted under the leadership of Superintendent of Police (West) Namit Pathak, comprises experienced officers from different wings of the Tripura Police. The SIT was formally constituted following a government order issued on July 25, directing a “thorough, coordinated and expeditious investigation” into West Agartala Police Station Unnatural Death Case No. 2026WAG045. The case was registered on July 20 under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The order reflects the government’s commitment to conducting a detailed and impartial investigation into the death of the senior police officer.
In addition to SP Namit Pathak, the SIT includes Additional SP (Urban) Dhruba Nath, Additional SP (AN) Souvik De, Deputy SP Benjamin Dewan from the Cyber Crime Police Station, Inspector Bhaskar Saha, and several other experienced investigators. The diverse composition of the team is intended to ensure expertise across multiple investigative domains, including cyber analysis, forensic examination, intelligence gathering, and field investigation.
According to sources, investigators in Delhi will focus on examining Dhankhar’s professional engagements, personal interactions, digital communications, travel records, and other relevant evidence from the days preceding his death. Officials are also expected to question individuals who may possess information capable of assisting the investigation. Every possible angle is reportedly being examined to determine whether any external circumstances or contributing factors played a role in the incident.
The death of a serving Director General of Police has generated considerable attention across administrative, political, and law enforcement circles in Tripura and beyond. Given the seniority of the officer and the significance of the position he held, the investigation is being closely monitored by both state authorities and national agencies.
