The All India Forward Bloc has opposed the Tripura government’s decision to remove Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s name from the upgraded State Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital, demanding immediate restoration of the original name while alleging disrespect to the freedom fighter’s legacy.
The All India Forward Bloc’s Tripura State Coordinating Committee has strongly opposed the state government’s decision to remove the name of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose from a government homoeopathic hospital that has recently been upgraded into a State Homoeopathic Medical College. The party has urged the government to immediately restore the institution’s previous name, arguing that the move undermines the legacy and contribution of one of India’s most revered freedom fighters.
According to a statement issued by the Forward Bloc, the hospital located at Sadhutila Renters Colony has been renamed as the Tripura Government Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital, replacing its earlier identity as the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose State Homoeopathic Hospital.
The party, which is a constituent of the opposition Left Front in Tripura, criticised the decision, alleging that the omission of Netaji’s name from the institution reflects a lack of respect for his immense contribution to India’s freedom struggle. It stated that Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose played a historic and unparalleled role in the country’s independence movement and was instrumental in the establishment of the Azad Hind Government.
The Forward Bloc maintained that removing his name from a public institution not only diminishes his historical significance but also sends an inappropriate message regarding the sacrifices made by India’s freedom fighters. The party argued that educational and healthcare institutions named after national icons serve as a reminder of their contributions and inspire future generations.
Expressing concern over the renaming, the party said that the government should have retained Netaji’s name even after upgrading the hospital into a medical college. It claimed that the change was unnecessary and called upon the authorities to reconsider the decision in the interest of preserving the nation’s historical legacy.
The statement further informed that the Forward Bloc has submitted a formal letter to Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha protesting the renaming of the institution. In the letter, the party requested the Chief Minister to intervene personally and restore the previous name bearing Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s identity.
The party reiterated that honouring national leaders through public institutions is an important way of recognising their invaluable contributions to the country. It maintained that removing such names could hurt public sentiments, particularly among those who deeply respect Netaji’s role in India’s struggle for independence.
The issue has added a political dimension to the upgrading of the state’s homoeopathic healthcare institution, with the opposition demanding that the government reverse its decision. As of now, the state government has not issued any official response regarding the Forward Bloc’s demand or the letter submitted to the Chief Minister.

The Forward Bloc has expressed hope that the government will review the matter and reinstate the earlier name of the institution, ensuring that Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s legacy continues to be honoured in Tripura’s public institutions.
